Welcome to Preschool at St. Joseph Catholic School!

I am so excited to be your child’s preschool teacher this year!

This is my ninth year at St. Joseph Catholic School and I am looking

forward to helping your child grow, and learn,

and have fun this year.

I have been a preschool teacher in Libertyville for over 25 years,

and am passionate about helping young children learn.

I believe children learn best with hands-on experiences and

help facilitate their many different learning styles

in a kind and nurturing setting.

We will have an amazing year together meeting new friends, sharing new

discoveries, and learning new skills everyday.

Our instructional aide, Mrs. Tina Truskowski, has much experience in the classroom

after being a aide at St. Joseph Catholic School for over 15 years!

Together, we help build positive relationships with children to help foster

growth and confidence in a caring classroom community.

We are both looking forward to sharing a wonderful year with your child.

Music with Mr. Showstead! 🔔  The children sang along to “Jingle Bells” and took turns playing hand percussion jingle bells! Great rhythm, preschoolers! We learned a new song that introduced us to the animals who were with Mary and Joseph in the stable on Christmas Eve!
Turkey Feathers Math Center! We added a die to our activity to gain practice with number sense fine motor skills!
Me Bags with Kathleen! We discovered that Kathleen’s has 10 cousins and her family is going to have a new baby boy in March! Congratulations! Kathleen’s favorite stuffie is Simba, and she sleeps with him each night❤️ She loves Paw Patrol and showed us a birthday card from her Grandma and Grandpa, and a favorite storybook! Kathleen enjoyed visiting Disney World and Cinderella’s castle. She showed us her Wishing Star and wristband! Thank you for sharing all about you, Kathleen!

Sequencing Stories

We had further practice with our sequencing story boards today!Preschoolers ordered events of the story and told their story! We love this for building our young readers ability to “picture read” a story, add details, and develop their own confidence and language skills! We so enjoyed listening to each of their stories! Look forward to hearing from more of our emergent readers!
Our color-of-the-month inspired fine motor activity! Picking up small manipulatives, such as Cheerios, hells develop a preschooler’s pincer grip, and strengthen that fine motor control!
Our Literacy Circle had us practicing identifying lowercase lower letters A-L, and locating their uppercase match! The children enjoyed singing our Acorn Brown, and rhyming to color words! They were surprised to hear that there was no rhyme for the color word PURLPE!
B-R-O-W-N  Our color focus this month introduced us to spelling the word in a song! Today the children listened and followed directions during whole group to cut and sequence letters of BROWN 🐻
Our Gratitude Game helps preschoolers focus on thankfulness and alltheir many blessings. This activity helped them go beyond the list of typical answers and really think about all things we appreciate in our life! Preschoolers listed Grandma, my school, Target, Jude, pizza, my dog, Whole Foods, the library, Fruit Loops, and many more! We love this activity for helping children develop a language of gratefulness!❤️
Please help fill this need! ❤️❤️Our discussions while playing the Gratitude Game brought up discussions of thankfulness for things, such as our home and beds. When the children learned that there are children in Libertyville and other areas that do not have a bed or even a pillow they were in disbelief! They learned that these children sleep on the floor, many making beds out of piles of clothing. What we take for granted is a true need for many in Lake County. Please do what you can to help these young children during our Pillow Drive next week❤️❤️ Thank you so much
Popping’ for Popcorn! Such a fun lesson! Preschoolers were told they were going to watch a video, and had to guess what they were watching! They were just given one rule to follow….Don’t say what you think it is! We wanted to give all the children the opportunity to make this discovery! You can see during the video some are covering their mouths, because they have guessed they were watching popping corn pop!!!! After watching the slo-mo video (with musical accompaniment!), we then asked the children what they saw! They sure guessed it right, too! The funnest part of the morning was watching our own popping corn pop! We placed our hot-air popper on a white sheet without the top! As the air heated up, we watched the explosion of popping corn! Preschoolers created a 5 senses chartlet and listed how the popping corn looked, felt, smelled, sounded, and tasted (used our previous experiences!)
Pic will follow! 🍿
Movement & Math?!? What to do to get this group up and moving? Have a popcorn throwing race! Preschoolers took turns to throw 1 popped kernel of popcorn from behind the black line! We made observations and compared where each popped kernel fell, and discovered that many went the same distance! There was one that went the farthest, though! We measured the distance to be 9 feet, 2 inches! Imagine that!
This week’s literacy focus has been sequencing events of a story! What happened first, second…..? Our Plus class did an amazing job of illustrating, cutting, and organizing events of how Popcorn grows! They did an awes9me job of retelling their “story”! Love their choice of vertical or horizontal placement!
Even before we introduced our Happiness Spot book, these preschoolers were “caught” begin kind by helping friends in the classroom!
Letter Weeks mean Thursdays are for phonics and letter writing! We review our letter paper as a group during instruction, as each section is broken down with preschoolers taking turns to complete! The children are then given materials to complete the papers on their own! We love keeping the children involved during lesson delivery, and watching their skills grow!
Corduroy’s Week with Marek and his family! Corduroy enjoyed playing Monopoly with Marek and his Grandpa and even pocketed his own Minopoly money! He accompanied Marek to soccer practice at Lil’ Kickers and to get a haircut! But Corduroy decided it wasn’t quite time for a trim yet! Corduroy discovered that Jimmy John’s is Marek’s favorite, and his Mom makes a really good ham and cheese sandwich, too! Marek’s family began decorating for Christmas, and he even made a special tree ornament for Corduroy! 🌲 Can’t wait to see where this bear goes next! 🐻 💚🐻
