PreK 3

Religion - God Made Me Active: “I Can Move”. God made us able to move, and our movements can praise God.The children will express appreciation for their ability to move. They will explain that movements can praise God. The children will enjoy moving and dancing.

Math - Sorting by single attribute. One to one correspondence. Focus on shape of the month:  oval. 

Science - Melting Ice Experiment. “What will happen to ice in warm temperatures?” Making predictions, observations, evaluating results, using language to express ideas about experiment. 

Social Studies -  Classroom community development. Sharing materials and respecting others.

Media - Enter the Kingdom of Books Book Fair! Preschoolers may visit the Book Fair with an adult during school hours! Lots of goodies available including puzzles and games! Books may be purchased at school or online. If you are looking for volunteer opportunities within our school community, this is a great one! Please contact Mrs. Hoglund!

Language/Literacy - Recognizing names in print. Recognizing letters in name. Enhancing listening skills with two step directions. Motivation to read: imitate reading behaviors. Letter Focus of the Week: Nn. Home/school connection: bring an item to school that begins with Letter ‘N’.

Religion - Special Unit: God Knows My Name. It seems almost unimaginable that the God who created the universe and all that is in it would know each and every one of our names! The children will learn the Bible says this is so. Preschoolers will understand that God hears our thoughts, and cares for His creatures, both great and small. They will enjoy creating a name mosaic.

Social Studies - Scholastic My BIG World with Clifford: “Make Words with Snow!” Science focus: snow. Literacy focus: compound words. Vocabulary: snowfall, snowflake, snowman, snowplow, snowsuit. Skills: group discussion, critical thinking, vocabulary, phonological awareness, gross-motor skills, number recognition.

Literacy - OWL - Unit 4 - Week 3. In the Barnyard: “Why do farmers have animals?” Phonological Awareness: beginning sounds,  rhyming words.  Alphabet Knowledge: letter names, Match It/Say It, matching upper/lowercase letters.Letter Writing. Shared Writing. Oral Language: demonstrate meaning or words. Categorize Words. Comprehension: respond appropriately, answer questions about a book. Concept Words: cow, egg, hen, pig, sheep, milk. Amazing Words: deal, electric, impatient, exchange, furious, daily. Letter Focus of the Week: Nn. Home/school connection: bring an item to school that begins with Letter ‘N’’.

Math - Number & Operations. Use concrete models to make 5. Create word problems for making 5. Count items in any order.  Compare sets of up to five. Problem solving with sets up to five. Collecting data, adding data to the graphic organizer, analyzing results. Ways to represent a number: tally, ten frame, picture, digit.

Science - Hot/Cold. “How does temperature affect snow?”  Categorizing weather activities. Snow investigation: Preschoolers will use scientific tools to observe and make conclusions about snowflakes. They will be introduced to the 7 basic shapes of snowflakes. The children will learn that each snowflake is unique!

Art in the Box  -  So what is Art-in-a-box?  Art-in-a-box is a program where volunteers come in and teach a lesson about a particular artist or author/illustrator, and then lead a hands-on project based on that artist’s work. These lessons are tailored specifically for preschoolers and give parents a special opportunity to help out in our classroom! The preschool students will have 3-4 lessons (with 3-4 different artists) per year. We look forward to sharing this special St. Joseph Little Knights unit with our preschoolers. This month’s author: Dr. Seuss! Author and illustrator known for his rhymes and unique characters, presented by Michelle Brasky (Emma’s Mom) and Charlotte Murry (Madeline’s Mom).. Media - Enter the Kingdom of Books Book Fair! Preschoolers may visit the Book Fair during their Media class this week on Thursday! Awesome selection of books!! Look for information online or flyers sent home this week! Thank you for helping support our school!

World Travelers Visit China - Gung Hay Fat Choy! Celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year. Preschoolers will be involved in learning about this holiday and traditions surrounding the celebration. Preschoolers will learn the significance of the color red, oranges, Lucky Red envelopes, as well as a new haircut and clean house play in this cultural lesson. The children will identify animals of the Chinese zodiac and make a Rabbit (2023 Year of the Rabbit) using the Asian paper-folding technique of origami. They will learn that the Dragon Dance is used to celebrate spring rain and sun, and enjoy making a dragon of their own. Preschoolers will experience using chopsticks (fine motor development).. The children will be introduced to characters of the Mandarin language for numbers 1-10 and attempt to make some of their own. We will Learn about the history of the Great Wall and attempt to construct our own!
