Peek at Our Week: December 4 - December 8, 2023
Preschool 3’s
Religion - Advent: The children will know that Christmas is Jesus’ birthday. They will understand that sometimes we show our love by giving gifts, and God’s gift to us is Jesus.
Language/Literacy - Shared book experience. Building oral language through repeated readings of favorite stories to encourage children to “read” along on parts of the story they remember. Use of rhyme and alliteration to build phonological awareness. Letter Focus of the Week: Kk.
Math - Observing similarities and differences of attributes to sort and classify. Focus on Shape of the Week: Star.
Science - The Sweet Smell of Christmas. Preschoolers will use their 5 senses to identify the smells of Christmas such as cocoa, peppermint, and evergreen. They will use word/picture identification to match these scents. The children will use early literacy skills to make connections between the spoken word and print. They will enjoy listening to this holiday story. Preschoolers will enjoy creating their own “sweet smells of Christmas” item to take home.

PreK 4
Religion - Advent: The children will be excited about preparing for the birth of Baby Jesus. They will know that at Christmas we celebrate the birth of Jesus. The children will desire to prepare for Jesus’ birthday and think of several kind acts they might perform as a gift for Jesus.
Social Studies - St. Nicholas Day.. The children will hear the story of the real Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of children. They will learn that he was generous and helped others by giving them gold coins. They will learn that he was generous and often helped others. The children will learn about St. Nicholas Day and what tradition means.
Literacy/Language Heggerty Lesson Overview: Weeks 13-18. Preschoolers will:
- Recognize rhyming words from non-rhyming words.
- Isolate the initial sound in spoken words.
- Learn to blend two party into a spoken word
- Learn to isolate the medial sound in a spoken word.
- Learn to segment a spoken word into two parts, onset and rime.
- Manipulate the initial phoneme in a spoken word by adding and deleting the first sound.
Alphabet knowledge: name letters and recognize letter sounds Concept of print. Oral language: demonstrate understanding of words, categorize words, demonstrate meaning of words. Name upper/lowercase letters Aa - Kk. Letter Focus of the Week: Kk.
Math - Geometry: Name common shapes, identify solid shapes, name and describe attributes of solid shapes, create solid shapes using various materials. Ten frame: using a graphic tool to foster math skills & concepts. Ordering by size. Representing & writing numbers 1-12. Measuring: using non-standard units. Patterning. Shape Focus of the Month: Star.
Science - Fizzy Star Science - Hands-on science. Preschoolers will witness the chemical reaction between the two ingredients as they produce carbon dioxide, the bubbles they observe. They will follow listen to follow directions of this experiments. Liquids/solids - identify differences. Children will predict what will occur. Using information gathered from observations, children will draw conclusions.

World Travelers - Christmas Around the World! We will be celebrating diversity as we learn about other cultures and traditions. Activities involved will help foster enthusiasm and curiosity for other customs and celebrations around the world. Our holiday unit will focus on: Christmas celebrations in Holland, England, and Germany, Las Posadas in Mexico, and Hanukkah in Israel.
