Welcome to Preschool at St. Joseph Catholic School!

I am so excited to be your child’s preschool teacher this year!

This is my sixth year at St. Joseph Catholic School and I am looking

forward to helping your child grow, and learn,

and have fun this year.

I have been a preschool teacher in Libertyville for over 25 years,

and am passionate about helping young children learn.

I believe children learn best with hands-on experiences and

help facilitate their many different learning styles

in a kind and nurturing setting.

We will have an amazing year together meeting new friends, sharing new

discoveries, and learning new skills everyday.

Our instructional aide, Mrs. Tina Truskowski, has much experience in the classroom

after being a aide at St. Joseph Catholic School for over 15 years!

Together, we help build positive relationships with children to help foster

growth and confidence in a caring classroom community.

We are both looking forward to sharing a wonderful year with your child.

Once upon a time... Our favorite fairy tale reads from “Jack and the Beanstalk “! A wonderful selection to compare/contrast story, ending, characters, and illustrations! The real photograph one was a favorite!!

The Giant delivered a fittingly giant-sized note, along with a giant-sized chocolate chip cookie! In one of our reads this week, Jack is lured into the Gisnt’s castle by the delicious smell of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies! What a wonderful end to a fun week of Jack and the Giant fun!!

Mrs. Bosco popped in, only to be surprised with a share of the Giant’ treat!

Jack and the Beanstalk STEAM!

If we could measure the excitement during this activity, it would have been an off-the-charts 11!!! Preschoolers challenge was to see how many “clouds” their beanstalk could hold! This involved much collaboration and communication, as well as experimenting with balance and method! Working in teams, they colored both Jack and the Giant’s castle to add above the beanstalk. Counting carefully, they then added cotton ball clouds atop their beanstalk! Many numbered over 30 clouds! Loved the trial & error, tenacity, and friendship!

Jack and the Beanstalk Science: “What does a plant need to grow?” Preschoolers are growing their own bean plants in class! We discussed what plants need to grow and predicted the best location in the classroom for our bean plants to grow! We tallied our results!

Our upper elementary friends started a game of Duck, Duck, Goose for us!

Fun in the Sun☀️

Boom-whacker Fun in Music! Love these for helping develop skills in rhythm, listening and following directions, and self-regulation!! Added bonus: tons of fun!

Jack and the Giant Math Centers! We love integrating literature into other areas such as Math! Our Beanstalk now stands proudly in our room! In order to measure it, however, we used green tape on the floor to represent its height! Working in teams, preschoolers lasted out and counted how many Jack feet and Giant feet tall our beanstalk is!! Recording sheets gave us practice writing our numbers!

Shake the Magic Beans! Preschoolers took turns shaking out double-sided beans, red on one side and white in the other. They then graphed the results! The children were introduced to the concept of probability as they discovered most shakes had 2 or 3 red sides facing up!

Jack and the Beanstalk puzzle! We love puzzles for helping to develop skills such as problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills!! And such a feeling of accomplishment when it is complete 😊

Measure the Room💚 So fun using our bean rulers to “measure” items in our room! Using non-standard units to measure, such as beans, gives preschoolers a greater understanding of measuring and how it works!

Build Your Beanstalk💚

Loved to watch this activity unfold! Preschoolers took turns rolling dice, and adding that number of cubes to their beanstalk! So fun watching them compare height of each other’s towers and understand that the taller the stalk, the higher the numbers rolled!! Great concept building!

Religion - Chapter 22 - God Made Big Things. God is great and powerful. The children will be impressed with some big things made by God. they will realize that God is great and powerful and praise and thank God. Seeds Lesson: The children will recognize the people who care for them and recognize ways they show care. The children will recognize a shepherd as an image of God’s care. They will identify Jesus as the Good Shepherd. The children will recognize that Jesus takes care of them. They will complete an end-of-year certificate.

STEAM - Storytime STEAM: “Jack and the Beanstalk” - Preschoolers will create a beanstalk for our classroom! They will be involved in exploring several versions of this classic fairy tale, and explain the similarities/differences between them. They will sequence events in the story: beginning, middle, and end. Jack Feet vs. Giant Feet: using non-standard units, they will measure our beanstalk,record their findings, and make comparisons of size. The children will engineer their own beanstalk, using various materials, that can support the Giant’s castle.Preschoolers will plant their own bean plant and record observations over time.

OWL - Unit 6 Week 1 - Daytime and Nighttime: “What happens when day changes to night?” Phonological awareness: blending 2 and 3- phonemes words, produce rhyming words, identify rhyming words. Math - Geometry: comparing/moving shapes, name common shapes, create a picture graph. Numbers & Operations: counting to 20, writing our numbers, comparing numbers, recognizing and sequencing numbers 0-10, graphing results of bean probability.

Preschool+Plus

Religion - May Crowning. Preschoolers will host a get-together with Ms. Nash’s class and view a live streaming of St. Joseph’s May Crowning.

Sharks! Preschoolers will be introduced to many different species of these toothy creatures. Shark Bingo: children will be able to match silhouettes of various sharks by identifying characteristics unique to each. The children will learn about the anatomy of a shark, and discover how they propel their stream-lined, torpedo shaped body through the water. They will learn how sharks use their large brains to see, smell, hear, eat, and feel. Vocabulary: carnivore, cartilage, camoflage, cold-blooded, denticles. “Get on my boat”: preschoolers will gain a hands-on understanding of how to make 5!
