5th Grade Team

Hello and welcome back to school! I hope you had an incredible Summer filled with fun and adventures. My name is Mrs. Schiff and I am delighted to write to you as your child’s Math, Science and Social Studies teacher. We're going to learn, explore, and grow together in our wonderful classroom.

A little about myself: I have been married for 22 years and have lived in Libertyville for 24 years. I have four children: Amanda, who has been married for almost two years now; Olivia, who is a Sophomore at Indiana University Kelley School of Business; Ty, who is a Senior at LHS; and Audrina, who is in 5th grade here at SJCS.

Throughout my 13 years at St. Joseph Catholic School, I have been furthering my education. I earned my Education degree from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2019. Last year, I assumed the role of 5th - 8th grade Middle School Resource Teacher and worked with students who hold ISP’s and 504 plans. I am currently working towards earning my Special Education credential as well.

As this new school year starts, I will be working closely with each student to ensure their success. During my time as the 5-8 Resource Teacher, I gained a strong understanding of the Middle School Math, Science, and Social Studies curriculum. I will continue to work closely with these teachers to ensure the 5th graders are prepared for 6th grade.

I am grateful for your trust and support as their teacher, and feel free to contact me with any questions.

Many Blessings!

Also...I have created a new Amazon wish list of items that will help grow our library of knowledge and also improve my new way of teaching math and ensuring that each student continues to grow and learn in many different ways. We will also be learning study skills and I need supplies from my wish list to make this happen as well. Any donation is greatly appreciated. Link is here or under Amazon tab on the side... thank you!

Tuesday, March 18, 2025 Homework

Two field trip forms came home last week. They can be paid together in cash or on one check made out to St. Joseph Catholic School. They are due back as soon as possible. Thank you!

Math - None (Today, we worked on an IXL math lesson AHX on what we did yesterday in class: finding parts of a number using models. For example, what is 2/3 of 15? We would draw three boxes because the denominator tells us how many boxes there are. Then, we figured out how 15 would be divided equally into three boxes. Each box would have a 5 in it. Then we asked ourselves how much 2/3 of 15 is by adding the numbers of two boxes = 10. Please keep practicing multiplication flashcards at home, as we will do a lot of multiplication in the next few weeks.)

Science - None - Schiff Only (Today, we learned what a water cycle is.....evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. What three states can water exist in? Ice/solid, water/liquid, or water vapor/gas. We also took the lesson 1 quiz simultaneously, using our books for guidance. Miss Bubis's class did this yesterday.)

Social Studies - Finish reading chapters 10 & 11 in the Declaration books and the corresponding pages in the packet if not finished in class...DECLARATION BOOK PACKET IS DUE TOMORROW (We read chapters 10 & 11 in our Declaration books and did the corresponding pages in the packet to these chapters. We are off to a great start as they already love this book and all the information it shares with us.)

Reminders:

- I offer office hours Monday through Thursday if your child needs me to reteach something in Math, Science, or Social Studies. Please email me for assistance, and we will meet via the Google Meet link.

Upcoming events:

~ Field Trip to Feed My Starving Children on January 30th, during Catholic Schools Week. This will be the 5th grade service project for the year. The room parents will email the chaperone information as the date approaches. Permission forms will be sent home soon.

~ Field Trip on April 30th to Kenosha Public Museum to learn about Native American tribes living in Wisconsin and dissect Owl Pellets. We also have another Field Trip on May 21st to the Civil War Museum in Kenosha. More info is to come for chaperoning by our room parents—field trip forms to go home in April. I am so excited about these enrichment opportunities.

  • Words to Know Lesson 1 Quiz and Monday/Tuesday
  • Bill Nye the Science Guy video and worksheet on Biodiversity on Wednesday

Social Studies: The Declaration of Independence

  • On Monday and Tuesday, we will finish our Declaration of Independence books and comprehension packets. We will read chapters 7 through 11 and answer the questions that accompany them.

  2. Analyze the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution and the success of each in implementing the ideals of the Declaration of Independence.
  3. Evaluate the significant debates that occurred during the development of the Constitution and their ultimate resolutions in such areas as shared power among institutions, divided state-federal power, slavery, the rights of individual states, and the status of American Indian nations under the commerce clause.
  4. Enumerate the powers of government outlined in the Constitution and the fundamental liberties ensured by the Bill of Rights.
  5. Describe the basic law-making process and how the Constitution provides numerous opportunities to monitor and influence government.

Friday, March 14, 2025 Homework

Two field trip forms came home earlier this week. They can be paid together in cash or on one check made out to St. Joseph Catholic School. They are due by March 17th, please. Thank you!

Math - None - (Today, we took our Chapter 9 Math test. Grades are in PowerSchool, and the test is coming home today in Friday mail. Most students did not do well, which I expected as many struggled throughout this entire unit with finding common denominators, and tests are coming home to be fixed and earn points back with a parent's signature. THEY MUST COME BACK ON MONDAY...I WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY CORRECTIONS AFTER MONDAY!  Please keep practicing multiplication flashcards at home, as we will do a lot of multiplication in the next few weeks.)

Science - None (Since we are ahead for Science, I did more Social Studies in class today with a Louisiana Purchase packet lesson. This packet taught them all the key players in the game, as I like to call it...like: Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Federalists, Napoleon Bonaparte, etc...lots of great information taught with this packet. )

Social Studies - None (Today we worked on a packet about the War of 1812. This helped the students earn some national pride for the American's and learn how we claimed the land now known as the eastern United States. They also learned vocabulary words, like: impressment, nationalism, anthem, and secede.)

Reminders:

- I offer office hours Monday through Thursday if your child needs me to reteach something in Math, Science, or Social Studies. Please email me for assistance, and we will meet via the Google Meet link.

Thursday, March 13, 2025 Homework

Two field trip forms are coming home today. They can be paid together in cash or on one check made out to St. Joseph Catholic School. They are due by March 17th, please. Thank you!

Math - Practice Test worksheet - Chapter 9 test on Friday - (Today, we worked on a Practice test in class, and I provided another one as homework. This means they have practiced three times before our test tomorrow. Please keep practicing multiplication flashcards at home, as we will do a lot of multiplication in the next few weeks.)

Science - None (Since we are ahead a bit for Science, I did more Social Studies in class today with a First President's packet lesson. They learned vocabulary words such as Electoral College, inauguration, Cabinet, and political party. Some questions you might want to ask during dinner talk... What does unanimous mean? All electors voted the same way, or everyone agrees about something.  What conclusion can you draw from the fact that a unanimous vote elected George Washington?... maybe he was a popular guy, or people thought he would do a good job.  Here is an excellent inference question for this lesson... How did George Washington influence later governments?...he started the tradition of having a presidential cabinet to consult with him on different issues.)

Social Studies - D.O.G. is due by Friday (We read chapters 5 & 6 in our Declaration books and did the corresponding pages in the packet to these chapters. We are off to a great start as they already love this book and all the information it shares with us.)

Please keep practicing multiplication flashcards at home, as we will do a lot of multiplication in the next few weeks.)

Science - None (We took our science tests today, and I surprised the students with a note telling them where to find the answer to each question. They did a great job on this lesson, but we will continue to practice throughout week, so it becomes an easier concept. Please keep practicing multiplication flashcards at home, as we will do a lot of multiplication in the next few weeks.)

Science - None - Bubis Only (Today, we read in our textbooks and learned about how humans impact our ecosystems and environments. My class will do this assignment tomorrow.

Social Studies- Constitution packets are due by Wednesday, and D.O.G. is due by Friday (Today, we finished our Constitution books by reading chapters 8 & 9 and answering the questions that go along with these chapters. Here are some questions you can ask your child- What is the Bill of Rights?... It guarantees people's basic freedom.  What is the First Amendment?... The First Amendment protects five rights: religion, speech, press, assembly, and asking the government to correct wrongs.  How many years have women been allowed to vote? Since 1920, it has been 104 years.  How many total amendments have been added to the Constitution?... They have added 27 amendments to the Constitution.)
