My name is Ms. Bubis, and I am the fifth grade reading, language arts, and religion teacher at St. Joseph Catholic School. This is my fifth year at St. Joe's and my 21st year teaching.  Prior to teaching at St. Joe's, I spent eight years at St. Paul of the Cross School in Park Ridge teaching language arts – the first four years in seventh grade and the last four years in sixth grade. I began my teaching career at St. John Brebeuf School in Niles where I taught computer class to students in grades kindergarten through eighth. I am a 2003 graduate of Northeastern Illinois University where I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in elementary education with an endorsement in both language arts and social studies.
 
In my free time, I enjoy reading, traveling, being outdoors, and spending time with family and friends. I love palm trees and try to vacation in places that have them whenever possible. I enjoy watching and attending Blackhawks games and am a die-hard White Sox fan.

Week at a Glance: April 22-26

Reading: 

  • Show comprehension of the vocabulary words from Ch. 33-40 of A Night Divided with correct answers on the quiz (scheduled for Tuesday, April 23)
  • Create a word journal for the last set of vocabulary words for the novel (Ch. 41-47)
  • Show understanding of how to make inferences related to scenarios from Ch. 33-40 of A Night Divided
  • Show understanding of figurative language by correctly identifying different types in A Night Divided
  • Show understanding of Ch. 41-44 of A Night Divided with good class discussion about the events that take place

Language Arts:

  • Learn how to properly research for a persuasive paper
  • Learn how to properly cite a source in a persuasive paper
  • Show understanding of putting informational text into a student’s own words
  • Choose from a list of persuasive writing topics, and begin working on graphic organizer for rough draft of persuasive paper
  • Show comprehension of Week 28 spelling words (Greek words parts)

Religion: 

  • Recognize the changes that occur during puberty
  • Learn the importance of dealing with the stress of maturing
  • Practice ways to develop greater self-awareness
  • Show understanding of concepts taught in Religion class this year with correct answers on the Archdiocese of Chicago assessment review guide  *NOTE: This assessment will be given in early May and will not be entered into PowerSchool as a Religion grade; it is solely a measure of what the students have learned throughout the year.

Friday, April 19

  • Read Ch. 36-40 and show understanding of the events of those chapters with good class discussion
  • Show ability of identifying figurative language used in Ch. 29-37 of the novel by correctly identifying which type of figurative language a quote from one of the chapters is
  • Make inferences about events in Ch. 33-40 of the novel
  • Make text-to-world connections to events in Ch. 33-40 of the novel by responding to a journal prompt that ties into an event from those chapters
  • Show understanding of the vocabulary words from Ch. 33-40 by correctly answering questions during our Kahoot review game (The vocab. quiz is scheduled for Tuesday, April 23.)

Language Arts: 

  • Continue practicing Daily Oral Language (DOL) skills
  • Complete the weekly grammar spiral review worksheet daily at the beginning of L.A. (due Friday)
  • Begin learning about persuasive writing
  • Identify the opinion, reasons, and supporting evidence in a persuasive piece of writing
  • Successfully deconstruct a persuasive piece of writing using a graphic organizer
  • Show comprehension of Week 27 spelling words

Religion: 

  • Show understanding of Lessons 1 and 2 of Family Life with correct answers on the Unit 1 review
