Peek At Our Week October 29 – November 2, 2018

Religion Objectives:  

“Halloween/Feast of All Saints”.  The children will know that Halloween is related to a celebration of all the saints.  The children will become acquainted with Saint Elizabeth of Hungary and realize that they are to be saints. 

Seeds Lesson – We can see.  The children will be aware of their ability to see. The children will appreciate that Jesus gave Bartimaeus sight and express praise to God for the wonder and beauty of Creation.  

All Saints Day Mass: This will be our first mass with our Prayer Buddies.  We will take a visit to the church on Tuesday. 

Literacy Objectives: 

OWL – Unit 2 – Week 3 - “How does everyone in a family help?” Concept words chore, clean, cook, inside, outside and work. Amazing words dust, tidy, pitch, squeeze, scrub and slippery.  Break it – compound words, naming letters Bb, Ee, Mm and Tt.  Play name it/say it letters. Naming playground words. Use language in a discussion and use complete sentences. Answer questions and respond appropriately.  Delete words from compound words. Name letters.  Label and describe verbs. Answer questions about a story. Retell a story. Understand meaning of words. Concepts of print will be reviewed: front of the book, the back of the book, title location, author, illustrator, where to start reading and where to stop. Make It: onset and rhyme. What’s my word? Break apart words into syllables and blend syllables.  Separate sentences into words. Speak sentences using the correct inflection for the punctuation mark.  We will work on writing the letter Gg and finding it in our environment around us. 

Math Objectives: 

Writing numbers 1 – 10.  Adding to 4 and one more.  Listening to and solving story problems with addition. Creating story problems with addition. How many are hiding? Learning the characteristics of our shape of the month, the square. Spooky patterning. 

Science Objectives:    

Do grapes sink or float? What makes some things float and others sink? 

Social Studies Objectives:    

Identify similarities and differences of families.  Discuss the needs of pets. 

Afternoon Enrichment:

Monday: Number 7 exploration – forming the number correctly, the letters in its name, identifying the number 7 and counting to 7.  Spooky Halloween scratch art. 

Tuesday: IXL Math and writing with Storyline Online.   

Wednesday: Afternoon Gym with Mrs. Beyer’s class.  Germany continued!  The children learn about the German artist Paul Klee.   Paul Klee adored cats and his own pets were often models for his art work! As a result, we can see many cat-related works of art, an important one of which was The Cat and the Bird. This book of the same name talks about the friendship between a cat and a bird, told through a series of illustrations based on Paul Klee’s works. The children will make their own version of the Cat and The Bird.   We will also enjoy a snack of pumpernickel bread. Pumpernickel is bread originated from the Westphalian region of Germany; the traditional is made of only rye flour, is square with coarse grain texture and slightly sweet. Rye is a grain that can survive a winter freeze. It is very nutritious, and you can almost live on it. This is perfect for the Northern German regions where it is hard to grow wheat.  We will also enjoy learning the Chicken Dance.

Thursday: Author study of Doreen Cronin, author of the Click, Clack books.

Friday:  Halloween Count and Write the Room.  Music with Mr. Showstead.
