Mrs. Shreiner is a graduate of St. Norbert College and is currently working towards a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education.  Mrs. Shreiner is beginning her fourth year of teaching, but her first year teaching fourth grade.  She has always wanted to be a teacher and is excited to be a part of the St. Joseph community. Prior to teaching 4th grade, Mrs. Shreiner taught transitional kindergarten at an early childhood center.  On a personal note, Mrs. Shreiner grew up in Wisconsin and moved to Illinois after she graduated college.  In her free time she enjoys traveling, spending time with family and friends, and being outside with her dog. She loves to read and is always looking for book recommendations for herself and her classes!

Week at a Glance: January 22 - January 16

Reminders for this week: 
- Students will be taking iReady tests this week. 
 
Math: We will start this week by reviewing the first six lessons from Chapter 6. On Tuesday the students will take the Lesson 1-6 quiz. The rest of the week we will cover lessons 7 - 10. 
Objectives:
- Determine where to place the first digit when dividing.
- Solve division problems with greater numbers.
- Solve division problems that result in quotients that have zero. 
 
Social Studies: In Social Studies this week we are going to start exploring the Midwest. We will complete a geographical activity, introduce new vocabulary, and complete the unit inquiry activity. 
Objectives: 
- Apply map skills to locate geographical sites of the Midwest
- Categorize key elements of the economy, geography, transportation, history, and people of the Midwest over time. 

Religion: We are finishing Unit 3 in religion this week by covering how we can serve God and serve others. We finished the week by completing the Unit 3 activity packet. 
Objective: 
- Consider how Scripture and Traditions can deepen our understanding of the content.
 
LA/Reading: We are starting U3W3 in our MyView books this week. The focus is still on diversity, but the question this week is, how does music bring people together? We will read an autobiography this week, Trombone Shorty by Troy Andrews.. The vocabulary words for this week are: inspiration, create, heritage, festival, and performance.. Our language convention for this week is irregular verbs. The U3W3 test will be on Friday.
Objectives:
- Interact with sources in meaningful ways such as note taking, annotating, freewriting, or illustrations. 
- Use appropriate fluency when reading-grade level text.
- Recognize and analyze genre-specific characteristics, structures, and purposes within and across increasingly complex, traditional, contemporary, classical and diverse texts.
- Analyze the author’s use of print and graphic features to achieve specific purposes. 

Spelling: U3W3 words focus on words with final stable syllables, such as pollute.. Students will have two word choice activities and one spelling worksheet to help them prepare for the test on Friday.
Objectives:

- Demonstrate and apply spelling knowledge.

Welcome Back! I hope everyone is staying warm and enjoyed spending extra time as a family. This week is a little crazy because of our unexpected long weekend. The Spelling and LA tests have been changed to meet the needs of the students. The math quiz will be pushed back a couple days to provide the students enough time to review the material. 
 
Reminders:

Math: No homework today, we finished it in class. I encourage the students to continue to practice their division skills at home, IXL is a great resource for this. 

Week at a Glance: January 16 - January 19

Math: We are continuing to work through Ch 6: Divide by a One-digit number. This week we will focus on dividing numbers with remainders and interpreting remainders. Towards the end of the week we will review the first six lessons from this unit. We will take a Ch. 6 L1-6 quiz on Friday. 
Objectives:
- Students will solve problems by making a model.
- Students will divide with remainders and check using multiplication and addition.
- Students will interpret what the remainder means in the context of a division problem. 
 
Social Studies: We will continue Lesson 7: The Effects of Geography on Life in the Southeast. The focus of this question for this week is ‘How has geography helped shape daily life in the southeast?’ The students will explore elevation, bodies of water, natural resources, agriculture, and the weather of the Southeast. To finish, the students will complete a group activity using special purpose maps to answer questions about the Southeast. 
Objectives: 
- Interpret geographic information from special-purpose maps and images of the Southeast.
- Hypothesize the effects of geography and read to confirm or correct. 
 
Religion:  The focus for this week is Session 13: God is our Friend. We will discuss how God is always forgiving of us and how we can be like God when forgiving others. We will also discuss temptation and how it can affect our personal relationship with God and those around us. Mrs. Nelson will come in on Friday and talk to the class about the scriptures for mass this week. 
Objective: 
- Consider how Scripture and Traditions can deepen our understanding of the content.
 
LA/Reading: Due to the snow day and two shorter weeks we are going to continue with U3W2 this week. The question this week is, how do our experiences help us see the world differently? We will reread a section from Mama’s Window written by Lynn Rubright. The vocabulary words for this week are: subsided, dedication, impulsively, trance, grudge. Our language convention for this week is subject-verb agreement. The U3W2 test will be on Friday Jan 19. Throughout the week the students will write a short story that incorporates all five parts of having a plot within a realistic fiction story. 
Objectives:
- Analyze plot elements, including the rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. 
- Demonstrate understanding of words by relating them to their opposites and to words with similar but not identical meanings. 
- Explain the interactions of the characters and the changes they undergo.
- Explain the influence of the setting, including historical setting, on the plot. 
 
Spelling: Due to the snow day on Friday and two short weeks, we are extending U3W2 into this week. The children will take the spelling test on Thursday 1/18. U3W2 words focus on words that have r-controlled vowels, such as discard.

Math: We are beginning Chapter 6: Divide by a One-Digit Number. We will begin covering the first four lessons: Dividing multiples of 10, 100, 100, Estimate Quotients, Use Place Value to Divide, Use a model to Problem Solve. 
Objectives:
Use basic facts and patterns to divide mentally.
Estimate quotients using compatible numbers, basic facts, and place value.
Use place value and models to explore dividing one-digit numbers. 
Solve problems by making a model.

December 21

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone! The children had a wonderful time at our Christmas party today. Thank you to Mrs. Carter, Mrs. Woike, Mrs. Riley, Mrs. Catanese, and Mrs. Blake for all you did to make the party a success. Pictures from the party have been posted in the Christmas photo album on my webpage. I am looking forward to all the fun and learning that will take place in the new year!
