Mrs. Shreiner is a graduate of St. Norbert College and is currently working towards a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education.  Mrs. Shreiner is beginning her fourth year of teaching, but her first year teaching fourth grade.  She has always wanted to be a teacher and is excited to be a part of the St. Joseph community. Prior to teaching 4th grade, Mrs. Shreiner taught transitional kindergarten at an early childhood center.  On a personal note, Mrs. Shreiner grew up in Wisconsin and moved to Illinois after she graduated college.  In her free time she enjoys traveling, spending time with family and friends, and being outside with her dog. She loves to read and is always looking for book recommendations for herself and her classes!

Week at a Glance: December 11 - December 15

Math: This week we are beginning Chapter 5: Multiply Two-Digit Numbers. We will cover lessons 1-5: multiply by ten, estimating, using the distributive property, multiply by a two-digit number, and solving multi-step word problems. Objectives 
- Use properties and algorithms to multiply by tens. 
- Estimate products by rounding. 
- Explore multiplying by two digit numbers. 
- Multiply two two-digit numbers. 
- Use multiplication to solve multi-step word problems.
 
Social Studies: The students will work in groups to research a landmark of the Southeast. The groups will identify general information, the history, and fun facts about their landmark. They will work together to create a poster to share with the class. 
Objectives
- Apply map skills to locate landmarks of the Southeast.
- Gather information from sources on a Southeastern landmark and present it to the class. 
 
Religion: This week we will reflect on this special time in the church, Advent. We will look at what mass looks like during Advent and what traditions we have this time of year. We will also discuss how we can prepare for the birth of Jesus. We will have scriptures with Mrs. Nelson on Friday.
Objective: 
- Consider how Scripture and Traditions can deepen our understanding of Advent. 
 
LA/Reading: We are starting a new unit this week, Unit 3 Diversity. This week we will explore the diverse ways we communicate. The theme for this week is Realistic Fiction. Our story is a part of Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper. Vocabulary words for this story are frustrated, cool, confused, irritable, bothered. Our language concept of focus is prepositions and prepositional phrases.
Objectives 
- Use appropriate fluency when reading grade-level text. 
- Discuss specific ideas in the text that are important to the meaning. 
- Explain interactions of characters and the changes they undergo. 
- Make inferences and use evidence to support understanding. 
- Synthesize information to create new understanding. 
- Use text evidence to support an appropriate response.
 
Spelling:  The spelling words for this week are words that are related. For example, heal and health or breath and breathe. The spelling test will be Friday 12/15.

Week at a Glace: December 4 - December 8

- Social Studies Unit 2 tests need to be signed, corrected and turned in Monday.

Math: We are finishing Chapter 4 this week by working through lessons 10 and 11. These two lessons have the students working through multiplication word problems and multiplying across zeros. We will spend a day reviewing the concepts from this chapter and the students will take the Chapter 4 test on Thursday. 
     Objectives 
- Students will determine if a problem needs an estimate or an exact answer.
- Students will multiply multi-digit numbers with zeros by a one-digit number.
 
Social Studies: We are beginning our tour of the Southeast. We will explore different areas of the region such as Everglades National Park, Jamestown, John F. Kennedy Space Center, Memphis, Montgomery and more.
     Objectives:
- Apply map skills to locate nine important places in the Southeast.
- Describe the major physical and human features of the Southeast. 
- Identify the difficulties that early colonists faced.
 
Religion: This week we will reflect on this special time in the church, Advent. The children will each make their own advent wreath and “light” a candle each week. We will read about what Advent is and how we can prepare for the birth of Jesus. 
    Objective: 
- Consider how Scripture and Traditions can deepen our understanding of Advent. 
 
LA/Reading: We have finished all five weeks of the second unit in our MyView books. This week we will review the concepts we have covered over the last five weeks. We will look at vocabulary, parts of speech, plurals, prefixes and suffixes, story comprehension, and more. The children will take the Unit 2 test in three parts, over three days. We will review Monday and Tuesday and take the test Wednesday-Friday. Part 1 will be reading comprehension, part 2 will be vocabulary word study, and part three will be the writing portion of the test.
For writing this week, the students will create an informational travel article that explores a place with animals that have special adaptations. 
    Objectives 
- Compose informational text using genre characteristics and craft. 
- Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. 
- Recognize and analyze literary elements within and across increasingly complex traditional, contemporary, classical, and diverse literary texts

Week at a Glance: November 27 - December 1

Math: This week we are continuing to work through Chapter 4: Multiplication and Division. We will cover Lesson 7: Distributive Property, Lesson 8:Multiply by Regrouping, and Lesson 9 Multiply by a Multi-Digit Number. We will review lessons 5-9 on Thursday and take a review quiz for those lessons on Friday.

Objectives 

  • Students will use the Distributive Property to make multiplication easier.
  • Students will multiply a two-digit number by a one-digit number.
  • Students will multiply a multi-digit number by a one-digit number.

Social Studies: This week we will create a study guide for our Unit 2 test. We will spend the day on Monday filling out the study guide and reviewing for the test. We will take the Unit 2 test on Wednesday. We will then begin our third unit, The Southeast. 

Objectives:

  • Simulate the population density of the Northeast and compare it with that of other regions of the United States
  • Evaluate the effect of population density on the lives of urban-and-rural dwelling northeasterners.
  • Categorize key elements of the economy, geography, government, history, and people of the Northeast. 

Religion: This week we will learn about the different ways the church teaches us. We will explore the Apostles and their successors such as current and past popes. We will also learn about the new Apostle, Matthias. 

Objective: 

  • Consider how Scripture and Traditions can deepen our understanding 

LA/Reading: For U2W5 we will be reading an informational text about echidnas. We will begin by learning about unique animal adaptations. Our story this week is The Weird and Wonderful Echidna by: Mike Jung. This week we will continue to practice identifying part of speech in a word and explore the meaning of different Latin root words. The vocabulary words for this week are: unique, monotremes, adaptations, and burrow. The U2W5 test will be on Friday. 

Objectives 

  • Use appropriate fluency when reading grade-level text.
  • Recognize characteristics and structures of informational text.
  • Read text with purpose and understanding.
  • Generate questions about text before, during, and after reading to deepen understanding and gain information.
  • Use text evidence to support an appropriate response.
  • Discuss specific ideas in the text that are important to the meaning. 

Spelling:  The focus for the spelling words this week will be words with Latin roots. We will complete various activities throughout the week to expose us to these words. The spelling test this week will be on Friday. 

Objectives 

  • Demonstrate and apply phonetic knowledge
  • Determine the meaning of words with affixes such as mis-, sub-, -ment, -and ity/ty and roots such as auto, graph, and meter.

Math: This week we are going to review concepts from the last four chapters. The students will move around to different centers, play various math games, and work on IXL and iReady. 

Social Studies:  We will play some review games and other United States themed games. 

Religion: We are going to talk about Thanksgiving and what we are thankful for this week. The students will create thankful hearts to decorate our door with what they are thankful for this year. The students will also create a ‘Thankful for you’ card to give to someone this year. 

LA/Reading/Writing: Over the next couple days we will be reviewing various language concepts such as types of nouns, sentence structure, and punctuation. We will also complete a couple cold reads to practice our reading comprehension. The students will finish making their poetry book that we started last week. 

Spelling: We will continue to practice our spelling words from the last two units. The students will play review games like Around the World and a class Spelling Bee.
