Mrs. Shreiner is a graduate of St. Norbert College and is currently working towards a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education.  Mrs. Shreiner is beginning her fourth year of teaching, but her first year teaching fourth grade.  She has always wanted to be a teacher and is excited to be a part of the St. Joseph community. Prior to teaching 4th grade, Mrs. Shreiner taught transitional kindergarten at an early childhood center.  On a personal note, Mrs. Shreiner grew up in Wisconsin and moved to Illinois after she graduated college.  In her free time she enjoys traveling, spending time with family and friends, and being outside with her dog. She loves to read and is always looking for book recommendations for herself and her classes!

Week at a Glance - March 11 - March 15

Math: This week we are continuing with Chapter 9: Operations with Fractions. We will start the week by taking a quiz to review adding and subtracting like fractions. The rest of the week we will work on adding and subtracting mixed numbers. 
Objectives: 
- Students will add and subtract like fractions. 
- Students will add mixed numbers. 
- Students will subtract mixed numbers. 

Social Studies: The students will work in pairs to create their Southwest Diorama this week. Each group is assigned a specific location that they will create their diorama around. The students will read about their location and add details to their diorama that represents the uniqueness of each location. Each group will present their finished diorama to the class while the rest of the students take notes on each location. 
Objectives: 
- Work cooperatively with others to create a product that showcases the history and geography of the Southwest. 
- Tell the story of a geographic place through multiple perspectives. 
 
Religion:  We are continuing to reflect on Lent during religion this week. The children will take some time to reflect on their Lenten journey in their Lenten Journal. We will also read about the Stations of the Cross to help prepare for Thursday. 
Objectives: 
- Prepare for Easter Sunday through reflection and reading. 
- Reflect on Lenten journey through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.
 
LA/Reading: This week we will explore U4W3 in our literacy books. Our question for this week is, why should we do good deeds without expecting anything in return? We will learn about the elements, purpose, and point of view of drama and read the play La Culebra (The Snake) which is from the Multicultural Plays for Children written by Pamela Gerke. Our language convention for this week is adverbs. Our vocabulary words are: sensitive, exchange, deed, insisted, and satisfied. The U4W2 test will be on Friday. 
Objectives:
- Make connections between the text of a story or drama and a visual or oral presentation of the text, identifying where each version reflects specific descriptions and directions in the text. 
-Explain structure in drama such as character tags, acts, scenes, and stage directions. 
-Read and comprehend a literary text. 
-Infer basic themes supported by text evidence. 
 
Spelling: Our spelling words for this week focus on words with a VV syllable pattern. The students will complete three word choice activities and one spelling worksheet to help them prepare for the test on Friday. 
Objectives:
-  Demonstrate and apply phonetic knowledge by decoding words using advanced knowledge of syllable division patterns such as VV.

Week at a Glance: March 4 - March 8

Math: We will finish Chapter 8 this week and take our chapter test on Wednesday. Thursday we will begin Chapter 9: Operations with Fractions. We will start this chapter by learning how to add and subtract like fractions. 
Objectives: 
- Students will write mixed numbers and improper fractions.
- Students will add like fractions. 
- Students will subtract like fractions. 
 
Social Studies: The children will complete the Midwest Unit by choosing four people that they think would be great faces of the ‘new’ Mount Rushmore. Each student will white a short explanation stating why they picked those four people and then they will create their version of Mount Rushmore on paper. We will start our next unit, The Southwest, this week. We will start by learning about the people of the Southeast. We will then take a virtual tour of some of the interesting places in this region, including the Hoover Dam, El Paso, Austin, and the Grand Canyon. 
Objectives: 
- Tell the story of a geographic place through multiple perspectives. 
- Work cooperatively with others to create a product that showcases the history and geography of the Southeast.
 
Religion: We are continuing to reflect on Lent during religion this week. The children will take some time to reflect on their Lenten journey so far in their Lenten Journal. We will go to reconciliation during the day on Tuesday. Mrs. Nelson will talk to the students about the readings for the weekend on Friday. 
Objectives: 
- Prepare for Easter Sunday through reflection and reading. 
- Reflect on Lenten journey through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.
 
LA/Reading: This week we will explore U4W2 in our literacy books. Our question for this week is, how can being different be an advantage? We will learn about the elements, purpose, and text structure of tall tales and read Thunder Rose by Jerdine Nolen. We will learn about inferring themes, exaggeration, and developing reasons. Our language convention for this week is adjectives. Our vocabulary words are: accentuated, obliged, misled, commendable, riled. The U4W2 test will be on Friday this week. 
Objectives:
- Demonstrate knowledge of distinguishing characteristics of well-known children’s literature such as folktales, fables, legends, myths, and tall tales. 
- Infer basic themes supported by text evidence. 
- Make connections to personal experiences, ideas in other texts, and society. 
- Make inferences and use evidence to support understanding. 
 
Spelling: Our spelling words for this week focus on words with suffixes. The students will complete three word choice activities and one spelling worksheet to help them prepare for the test on Friday. 
Objectives:
- Demonstrate and apply phonetic knowledge.
- Demonstrate and apply spelling knowledge.
- Demonstrate and apply phonetic knowledge by decoding words using knowledge of suffixes, including how they can change base words such as dropping e, changing y to i and doubling final consonants.

Math: We are continuing Chapter 8: Fractions this week, focusing on Lessons 7-9. We will begin the week covering Lesson 7 Use Benchmark Fractions to Compare and Order and then the students will take a review quiz for Lessons 3-7 on Tuesday. We will then explore Lesson 8 Problem-Solving Investigation: Use Logical Reasoning and Lesson 9 Mixed Numbers. 
Objectives: 
- Use benchmark fractions to compare and order numbers. 
- Use logical reasoning to solve problems. 
- Represent mixed numbers by decomposing them into a sum of whale numbers and unit fractions.

Our theme for this unit is Impacts with the overall question of, how do stories shape our world? Our focus for this first week is Traditional Tales Around the World focusing on the question: how can revealing a secret make it lose its power? Our language convention for this week is pronouns. The vocabulary words for this week are: deceived, bargain, reputation, astonishment, and composure. Our story this week is a Traditional Literature story called, Can You Guess My Name? written by Judy Sierra. The U4W1 test will be on Thursday. 
Objectives:
- Demonstrate knowledge of distinguishing characteristics of well-known children’s literature such as folktales, fables, legends, myths, and tall tales. 
- Make connections to personal experiences, ideas in other texts and the larger society. 
- Explain the interactions of the characters and the changes they undergo. 
- Compare and contrast the treatments of similar themes and topics. 
- Synthesize information to create new understanding
 
Spelling: Our spelling words for this week focus on words with Greek and Latin prefixes. For example, automobile and transit. The children will complete two word choice activities and a spelling worksheet to prepare them for the spelling test on Thursday.
