Mrs. Shreiner is a graduate of St. Norbert College and is currently working towards a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education.  Mrs. Shreiner is beginning her fourth year of teaching, but her first year teaching fourth grade.  She has always wanted to be a teacher and is excited to be a part of the St. Joseph community. Prior to teaching 4th grade, Mrs. Shreiner taught transitional kindergarten at an early childhood center.  On a personal note, Mrs. Shreiner grew up in Wisconsin and moved to Illinois after she graduated college.  In her free time she enjoys traveling, spending time with family and friends, and being outside with her dog. She loves to read and is always looking for book recommendations for herself and her classes!

Week at a Glance: April 29 - May 3

Reminders:
- Field Trip permission slips are due Monday, April 29
 
Math: We will finish Chapter 11 this week, Customary Measurement. We will learn about displaying measurement data on a line plot and solve measurement problems. On Wednesday we will review all nine lessons from Chapter 11 and take the Chapter test on Thursday. On Friday we are going to jump ahead to Chapter 13 Perimeter and Area and learn how to measure the perimeter of objects. 
Objectives: 
- Students will display measurement data in a line plot. 
- Students will solve problems involving measurement. 
- Students will convert time. 
- Students will convert customary units of length, capacity, and weight. 
 
Social Studies: We are continuing our journey through the Western region this week by visiting various cities throughout the region. We will explore Denver, Salt Lake City, Seattle, Portland, San Jose and Las Vegas. The children will begin working in groups to create a visual representation of one of the cities we explored. 
Objectives:
- Identify reasons why the West has attracted people. 
- Apply map skills to locate important sites in the West. 
- Describe the physical and human features of the West  moving on from the Southwest and moving onto the Western region of the United States. 
 
Religion: This week we are going to continue learning more about the Ten Commandments. This week we will focus more on the seventh through tenth commandments and how they relate to each other. We will continue to focus on ways to be more like God and reflect on ways we can live the commandments. 
Objective: 
- Consider how Scripture and Tradition can deepen your understanding. 
 
LA/Reading: We are heading back into our MyView books this week and starting Unit 5, our last unit of the year. This unit will focus on Features and all five weeks will cover features of the Earth. The overall question for this unit is, why is it important to understand our planet? For our first week the students will. Focus on the features and processes of Earth. We will read an excerpt from Planet Earth by Christine Taylor Butler. We will focus on analyzing text features and making inferences while reading the story. Our language convention for this week is relative adverbs. 
Objectives:
- Make, connect, or confirm predictions using text features, characteristics of genre, and structure. 
- Establish purpose of reading assigned and self-selected texts. 
- Make inferences and use evidence to support understanding. 
- Analyze the author’s use of print and graphic features to achieve specific purposes. 
- Identify the reasons and evidence a speaker provides to support particular points.
 
Spelling: Our spelling words for this week focus on the Latin Roots gener, port, dur, and ject. The students will complete three word choice activities and one spelling worksheet to help them prepare for the test on Friday. 
Objectives:
- Demonstrate and apply phonetic knowledge. 
- Determine the meaning and use of words with roots.

Math: We will continue Chapter 11 this week, Customary Measurement. We will be covering lessons five through seven and taking a quiz on Thursday. These lessons will cover customary units of weight, converting customary units of weight, and converting units of time. 
Objectives:

- Convert units of time. 
 
Social Studies: We are moving on from the Southwest and moving onto the Western region of the United States. We will begin by completing a geographical activity to familiarize ourselves with this region on a map. We will then spend the rest of the week exploring various stops in the Western region

LA/Reading: We will be finishing our novel study for Number the Stars this week. The students will continue to learn about the events before, during, and after the Holocaust. During this novel study, the students will respond to a variety of questions on the readings, complete character analyses, and create their own summaries of each chapter. Throughout this novel study the students will use maps to learn about where the story takes place and will also learn more about the Jewish community. This week the students will also complete a writing activity on what they would do if they were in the same situations as some of the characters in the story. Objectives:
- Students will learn about the elements of historical fiction and the Holocaust. 
- Integrate and evaluate information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally. 
- Analyze and understand the reasons and motivations that caused certain people to take a stand.
- Recognize and understand the courage and heroism of the Danish and Swedish people and all others who resisted the Nazis.
 
Spelling: We will not have any spelling tests during our Number the Stars novel study. Instead, the students will have weekly vocabulary tests on the words from each section of the book. This week the vocabulary words come from Section 3, chapters 13 - 17 of the book. The students will complete various vocabulary activities and take the test on Thursday. 
Objective:
- Students will be able to define vocabulary words.

Week at a Glance: April 15 - April 19

Math: We will begin Chapter 11 this week, Customary Measurement. We will cover the first four lessons this week on customary units of length and capacity as well as learning how to convert both. The students will take a quiz converting the first four lessons at the end of the week. 
Objectives:

Social Studies: This week we will continue to work as a class and in groups to learn more about the Alamo. We are using the book What Was the Alamo to help us explore the history of the Texas Revolution. 
Objectives:
- Students will learn about the historical events that took place at the Alamo and consider their impact on American history. 
- Students will be able to explain why the battle of the Alamo was fought. 
- Describe the events before, during, and after the Alamo. 
 
Religion: This week we are going to continue learning more about the Ten Commandments. Our first session will be an overview of the first three commandments and the Greatest Commandment, loving God and loving others. We will focus on ways to be more like God and reflect on ways we can improve how we show or love for God and others. 
Objective: 
- Consider how Scripture and Tradition can deepen your understanding. 
 
LA/Reading: This we will be continuing our novel study for Number the Stars. The students will continue to learn about the events before, during, and after the Holocaust. During this novel study, the students will respond to a variety of questions on the readings, complete character analyses, and create their own summaries of each chapter. Throughout this novel study the students will use maps to learn about where the story takes place and will also learn more about the Jewish community. This week the students will also complete a writing activity by putting themselves in the shoes of one of the characters and expressing their feelings about the war and what they are going through. 
Objectives:
- Students will learn about the elements of historical fiction and the Holocaust. 
- Integrate and evaluate information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally. 
- Analyze and understand the reasons and motivations that caused certain people to take a stand.
- Recognize and understand the courage and heroism of the Danish and Swedish people and all others who resisted the Nazis.

Math: We are completing Chapter 10, Fractions and Decimals, this week. We will begin the week by learning how to use place value and models to add decimals in Lesson 6. In Lesson 7 students will learn how to compare and order decimals. Wednesday will be a Chapter 10 review day and students will take the chapter test on Thursday. 
Objectives: 
- Identify, read, and write tenths and hundredths as decimals and fractions. 
- Use place value and equivalent fractions to add two fractions with respective denominators 10 and 100. 
- Compare and order decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size. 
 
Social Studies: Over the next few weeks the students will work as a class and in groups to learn more about the Alamo. We will use the book What Was the Alamo to help us explore the history of the Texas Revolution. 
Objectives:

LA/Reading: This week we will be starting our next novel study, Number the Stars. The students will learn about the events before, during, and after the Holocaust. During this novel study, the students will respond to a variety of questions on the readings, complete character analyses, and create their own summaries of each chapter. This week the students will also complete a script writing activity to retell one of the events from this first section. Throughout this novel study the students will use maps to learn about where the story takes place and will also learn more about the Jewish community.
