Mrs. Shreiner is a graduate of St. Norbert College and is currently working towards a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education.  Mrs. Shreiner is beginning her fourth year of teaching, but her first year teaching fourth grade.  She has always wanted to be a teacher and is excited to be a part of the St. Joseph community. Prior to teaching 4th grade, Mrs. Shreiner taught transitional kindergarten at an early childhood center.  On a personal note, Mrs. Shreiner grew up in Wisconsin and moved to Illinois after she graduated college.  In her free time she enjoys traveling, spending time with family and friends, and being outside with her dog. She loves to read and is always looking for book recommendations for herself and her classes!

Math: We are completing Chapter 10, Fractions and Decimals, this week. We will begin the week by learning how to use place value and models to add decimals in Lesson 6. In Lesson 7 students will learn how to compare and order decimals. Wednesday will be a Chapter 10 review day and students will take the chapter test on Thursday. 
Objectives: 
- Identify, read, and write tenths and hundredths as decimals and fractions. 
- Use place value and equivalent fractions to add two fractions with respective denominators 10 and 100. 
- Compare and order decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size. 
 
Social Studies: Over the next few weeks the students will work as a class and in groups to learn more about the Alamo. We will use the book What Was the Alamo to help us explore the history of the Texas Revolution. 
Objectives:
- Students will learn about the historical events that took place at the Alamo and consider their impact on American history. 
- Students will be able to explain why the battle of the Alamo was fought. 
 
Religion: We are going back into the book this week and learning about the Ten Commandments. We will read about the exodus, God choosing Moses and the departure from Egypt. The students will also learn what happened on Mount Sinai and the story of crossing the Red Sea. We will discuss why these stories are important while discussing the importance of each commandment. 
Objective: 
- Consider how Scripture and Tradition can deepen your understanding. 
 
LA/Reading: This week we will be starting our next novel study, Number the Stars. The students will learn about the events before, during, and after the Holocaust. During this novel study, the students will respond to a variety of questions on the readings, complete character analyses, and create their own summaries of each chapter. This week the students will also complete a script writing activity to retell one of the events from this first section. Throughout this novel study the students will use maps to learn about where the story takes place and will also learn more about the Jewish community. 
Objectives:
- Students will learn about the elements of historical fiction and the Holocaust. 
- Integrate and evaluate information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally. 
- Analyze and understand the reasons and motivations that caused certain people to take a stand.
- Recognize and understand the courage and heroism of the Danish and Swedish people and all others who resisted the Nazis.
 
Spelling: We will not have any spelling tests during our Number the Stars novel study. Instead, the students will have weekly vocabulary tests on the words from each section of the book. This week the vocabulary words come from Section 1, chapters 1 - 6 of the book. The students will complete various vocabulary activities and take the test on Friday. 
Objective:
- Students will be able to define vocabulary words.

Week at a Glance: April 2 - April 5

Happy Easter!

Math: We are starting Chapter 10: Decimals and Fractions. This week we will focus on tenths and hundredths and identifying the place value that connects with these terms. We will also start to turn our fractions into decimals and decimals into fractions. We will cover the first three lessons and have a review quiz. 
Objectives: 
- Students will explore using place-value charts and grids to model decimals. 
- Students will model and describe tenths as part of the base-ten system. 
- Students will model and describe hundredths as part of the base-ten system. 
- Students will identify, read, and write tenths and hundredths as decimals and fractions. 
 
Social Studies: Over the next few weeks the students will work as a class and in groups to learn more about the Alamo. We will use the book What Was the Alamo to help us explore the history of the Texas Revolution.

LA/Reading: This week we will explore U4W5 in our literacy books. Our question for this week is, how can being disobedient cause problems? The focus this week is on myths, exploring the characters, setting, and style. We will read two stories this week focusing on myths. We will read Pandora from The Beautiful Stories of Life by Cynthis Rylant and Race to the Top from Crystal Pool Myths and Legends of the Word which is a Maori Myth and is written by Geraldine McCaughrean. Our language convention for this week is superlative adjectives. Our vocabulary words are: shrewd, ornate, temperaments, parapet, and infernal. The U4W2 test will be on Friday. 
Objectives:
- Demonstrate knowledge of distinguishing characteristics of well-known children’s literature such as folktales, fables, legends, myths, and tall tales. 
- Evaluate details to determine key ideas. 
- Make inferences and use evidence to support understanding.
- Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including those that allude to significant characters found in mythology. 
 
Spelling: Our spelling words for this week focus on homophones. The students will complete two word choice activities and one spelling worksheet to help them prepare for the test on Friday. 
Objectives:
- Identify and explain the meaning of homophones such as rain/reign. 
- Correctly use frequently confused words.

Math: We will finish Chapter 9 this week and take our chapter test on Wednesday. We will cover multiplying fractions by whole numbers on Monday and then review for the test on Tuesday. Thursday and Friday we will complete Math centers focusing on the last 9 chapters we have covered this year.
Objectives: 
- Students will use models to multiply fractions. 
- Students will multiply fractions by whole numbers. 
 
Social Studies: We will finish our diorama presentations this week. We will also start our novel study on The Alamo. We will read a couple chapters a day and complete an activity packet for each chapter, What Was the Alamo? This book will help the students understand the history of the Alamo, introduce key people during this time, and work on reading comprehension skills. 
Objectives: 
- Work cooperatively with others to create a product that showcases the history and geography of the Southwest. 
- Tell the story of a geographic place through multiple perspectives. 
 
Religion:  We are continuing to reflect on Lent during religion this week. The children will take some time to reflect on their Lenten journey in their Lenten Journal. We will read about Holy Week and prepare for Easter. We will finish the week by creating a cross silhouette art project. 
Objectives: 
- Prepare for Easter Sunday through reflection and reading. 
- Reflect on Lenten journey through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.
 
LA/Reading: This week we will explore U4W4 in our literacy books. Our question for this week is, how can what we learn from stories guide our actions? We will learn about the elements and purpose of historical fiction and read The Secret of the Winter Count by Jacqueline Guest. Our language convention for this week is comparative adjectives. Our vocabulary words are: drought, intricate, wavering, unbidden, and snoozing. The U4W2 test will be on Friday. 
Objectives:
- Infer basic themes supported by text evidence. 
- Explain the influence of the setting, including historical setting, on the plot. 
- Retell, paraphrase, or summarize texts in ways that maintain meaning and logical order. 
- Use text evidence to support an appropriate response. 
 
Spelling: Our spelling words for this week focus on words with prefixes. The students will complete three word choice activities and one spelling worksheet to help them prepare for the test on Friday. 
Objectives:
- Demonstrate and apply phonetic knowledge by decoding words using knowledge of prefixes.
