Welcome to 2nd Grade with Mrs. Macdonald!

I am a Florida native and received my BA in Psychology with a minor in Spanish from the University of South Florida. After graduation, I pursued my Masters of Education through the University of Notre Dame’s ACE Service through Teaching Program and have been an educator for the last fourteen years. Additionally, I earned my English as a New Language endorsement through the University of Notre Dame in 2012. I taught at a Catholic school in Kansas City, Kansas, and I then moved to Chicago in 2010 where I spent eight years teaching second grade at a Catholic school in Pilsen. I am excited to be back for my fifth year of teaching in this beautiful school community.

In my free time, I enjoy running, reading, singing, traveling, and spending quality time with my family and friends. I could not imagine teaching anywhere else but a Catholic school, where I can share my faith with my students and watch them grow in their own relationships with God. I am especially looking forward to preparing my students for the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion.

Week at a Glance 4/29/24-5/4/24

Week at a Glance

Week of April 29, 2024-May 4, 2024

Math: We will wrap up our short chapter on Money. We will spend Monday continuing to review, and then the students will take their test on Tuesday. Students should continue practicing identifying pictures of coins, skip counting coin amounts, and finding the total value of collections of coins. Students should also be prepared to solve word problems involving coins. After the chapter on Money, we’ll proceed to the chapter on Time (another short chapter). Students will identify time to the nearest hour, half hour, and quarter hour. They have seen clocks quite a bit on their 5-a-day morning work, so hopefully we’ll jump right in with a good foundation.

Phonics (Fundations): We will finish up our Unit on words with ou and ow spelling patterns. Students should continue practicing the following trick words: Thursday, Saturday, Wednesday, bought, brought, piece. Students will take their Unit 14 assessment on Wednesday, and then the remainder of the week will focus on Unit 15 and words with the /oo/ sound of oo, ue, ew, and ou. New trick words will be January, February, and July.

Reading and Writing (Wit & Wisdom): We will return to identifying the main topic of different sections in an informational text as we continue our module on the Civil Rights Movement. Students will also be able to give examples of Civil Rights in order to understand the importance of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Additionally, students will compare a book and video about Martin Luther King, Jr. and record their knowledge in a chart. Finally, they will notice similarities in the words “segregation” and “integration” in order to determine the words’ meanings. *The Civil Rights Movement is a heavy topic, but we are doing our best to address it with great care.s

Science: None - We will be dedicating extra time to Religion this week for First Communion preparation. Science will resume the week of May 6th.

Social Studies: None - We will be dedicating extra time to Religion this week for First Communion preparation.

Religion: We are in the final preparation for First Communion, and what a week do we have coming up. We will spend extra time practicing for the Eucharist prayer service, the Godparents Day prayer service, and the First Communion Mass. We are so blessed to celebrate this special time together! Additionally, we will continue practicing our Mass responses and reflecting on the gift of receiving Jesus in the Eucharist.
