Welcome to 2nd Grade with Mrs. Macdonald!

 

I am a Florida native and received my BA in Psychology with a minor in Spanish from the University of South Florida. After graduation, I pursued my Masters of Education through the University of Notre Dame’s ACE Service through Teaching Program and have been an educator for the last fourteen years. Additionally, I earned my English as a New Language endorsement through the University of Notre Dame in 2012. I taught at a Catholic school in Kansas City, Kansas, and I then moved to Chicago in 2010 where I spent eight years teaching second grade at a Catholic school in Pilsen. I am excited to be back for my fifth year of teaching in this beautiful school community.

In my free time, I enjoy running, reading, singing, traveling, and spending quality time with my family and friends. I could not imagine teaching anywhere else but a Catholic school, where I can share my faith with my students and watch them grow in their own relationships with God. I am especially looking forward to preparing my students for the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion.

Week at a Glance

Week of April 8-12, 2024

Math: We will finish up our chapter on Data collection and analysis. We will not take a traditional chapter test. Instead, we will work on a project during class where the students will collect data and represent it in a bar graph, a picture graph, a line plot, and a bar graph.

Phonics (Fundations): We will continue working on reading and spelling words with long o spelling options (o, o-e, oa, oe, ow). Students will spell trick words from this past week (Monday, Tuesday, cousin), as well as new trick words: lose, beautiful, tomorrow. Students will also work to read decodable passages with proper rate and expression.

Reading and Writing (Wit & Wisdom): We are nearing the end of our big module on Westward expansion. This upcoming week students will use their informative writing skills to write a paragraph comparing and contrasting two versions of the legend of John Henry. They will review topic-specific vocabulary and apply these words to their writing. They will also focus on using their knowledge of prefixes (like un-) to determine the meaning of unknown words. Finally, they will use conjunctions to expand their sentences and improve their writing skills.

Science: None - see Social Studies

Social Studies: As we continue our Unit on Civics, students will discuss how leaders help their communities. Students will participate in a mock election, and they will also practice identifying community problems and solutions.

Religion: We will finish up our First Communion prep books. If you are following at home in the “Together” magazine, please follow the pages for Session 8. We will discuss how we are on a journey of faith and that we are called to share our faith journey by loving and serving others.

  • Please try to take your children to Mass over the weekend. In addition to First Communion preparation, we have been reviewing the parts of and the responses we say during Mass.
  • Solar Eclipse = Monday, 4/8 → Peak totality for our area will begin to occur during dismissal (1:58 pm). You can also watch the solar eclipse on the NASA website here. We learned about wearing safety glasses and what to expect during a solar eclipse this past week. We also found out the next total solar eclipse for our area of the world won’t be until 2044! (Wow!)
  • All School Mass = Tuesday, 4/9, at 8:30am in the church
  • Food Pantry Collection = Thursday, 4/11

Week of April 1-5, 2024

Happy Easter! We are an Easter people, and Alleluia is our song!

 

Math: Students will continue the chapter they started before Spring Break, which is all about data collection and analysis. Students will work to analyze bar graphs by answering questions about sets of data. They will also learn how to make a table (chart) to help solve problems, and they will show data points on line plots.

Phonics (FUNdations): We will start our new Phonics Unit (Unit 13), which includes spelling patterns for words with the long /o/ sound. More specifically, we will work on writing and reading words with oa (boat), oe (toe), ow (snow). Our trick words for the week are: Monday, Tuesday, cousin. (For these trick words, students should focus on tapping out the sounds that do what they are supposed to do and focus on remembering the tricky parts by heart, e.g., Monday → M_nday → tricky part is the o.) 

Reading and Writing (Wit & Wisdom): We will continue studying legends about the American west. We will identify story elements in the first version of John Henry we read before the break, and we will compare this version to a second version of the story. We will also work on revising our writing for topic-specific words, and we will also work more with collective nouns.

Science: None - see Social Studies

Social Studies: As we return to learn more about Social Studies, we will begin our chapter on the topic of Civics. This week’s essential question is “How can one person make a difference?” We will identify problems and possible solutions in various communities, and we will also identify the contributions of individuals to U.S. history and culture.

Religion: We will continue preparing to receive First Communion, and the next chapter we will study is on the topic of receiving. We will discuss how the early Christians gathered together to remember Jesus and how we receive the sacrament of Holy Communion. We will also explain that we are united with each other when we pray the Lord’s Prayer (the Our Father prayer).

Thank you to everyone who helped make the St. Joseph Day celebrations a huge success! The statue looked beautiful adorned with flowers, many people gathered together for food and fellowship for the St. Joseph dinner, we celebrated Mass as a school and parish community with Fr. Emanuel, and all of the students enjoyed donuts from Fr. Trout.

Week of March 18-22, 2024

Math: We wrapped up our chapter on 3-digit subtraction strategies with our assessment this past Friday. We will move to Chapter 9, which focuses on data collection and analysis. More specifically, students will record data from a survey, use data from a tally chart to make a picture graph (“pictograph”), and analyze data on picture graphs.

Phonics (Fundations): We will continue working on Unit 12 with words that contain oi and oy. This unit is short (only 5 lessons long), so we will take our Unit 12 assessment on Thursday, 3/21. In addition to words with double vowel syllables oi and oy, students will read and spell the following trick words: favorite, ocean, early.

Reading and Writing (Wit & Wisdom): Next week students will work to compare the different versions of the story of Johnny Appleseed (John Chapman) we have read about in this learning module. They will also listen to a legend about John Henry. They will identify story elements and compare this legend to ones they have previously read. They will improve their grammar as they experiment with collective nouns (e.g., a herd of buffalo).

Science: None - We will devote extra time to Religion so we can study the events of Holy Week in addition to preparing for First Communion.

Social Studies: None - We will resume our next Social Studies Unit (Civics) after Spring Break

Religion: In the next session, we will learn about and reflect on the story of the Last Supper. We will also reflect on the Eucharist (the Body and Blood of Christ) as our spiritual food and drink and think about how it nurtures us. We will spend extra time learning about the events of Holy Week.
