Week at a Glance
Week of November 1-6, 2020
Math: We will start to finish up Chapter 3 in our GoMath! textbooks as we continue to build our addition and subtraction fluency and fact automaticity. We will use different models and write number sentences (equations) that match subtraction and addition word problems. We will also solve problems that have equal groups and write repeated addition equations to find the total number of objects in arrays. This is the base for practicing basic multiplication problems. For additional practice with addition and subtraction fact fluency, students can make use of the second grade E skills on IXL.
Science: In Science this week, we will explore the question of whether a plant can survive without light. We will watch videos and conduct our own experiment during which we will attempt to grow plants with seeds in our classroom. We will use light to help our plant’s growth and compare the growth of these plants to a classroom plant that we will attempt to grow with complete darkness. We will make use of daily observations, and drawing to monitor the growth of our plants. This will guide our discussions of the parts of a plant and the life cycle of a plant.
Language Arts: The grammar lessons this week will continue to help students identify different types of sentences, specifically focusing on imperative (.) and exclamatory (!) sentences. We will revise and imitate the author’s writing style with a mentor sentence from Officer Buckle and Gloria as we also discuss the concept of proper nouns. In writing, we will move to a new g
Reading: This week we will continue with our comprehension of recalling information from texts by identifying facts and details. Students will answer questions beginning with who, what, where, when, why, and how. Students will continue to work on observing and making inferences with our Picture of the Day practice. The spelling lists will have words with diagraphs (two letters that work together to make one sound → sh, th, ch, wh, ck) to extend the students’ knowledge of patterns we learned this past week.
Social Studies: This week, we will start Chapter 2 in our My World textbooks. Throughout the chapter we will explore our world and compare different living environments. Students will learn new vocabulary, and identify the absolute and relative locations of a place using our book, videos, and interactive notebook activities.
Religion: We will shift our focus to work on a project about the Saints this week. We will start our week with a tri-fold craft explaining the differences between Halloween, All Saints Day, and All Souls Day. Then we will turn our attention to a specific saint - Saint Joan of Arc. We will learn about her life and discuss which moral lessons we can learn from her. We will end the week by completing a class poster to display as an all-school activity.
Reminders:
(E.20-add 3 one digit K.3- fact families F.2- ways to subtract and F.1- subtract one digit)
Week at a Glance
Week of October 26-30, 2020
Math: We will continue Chapter 3 in our GoMath textbooks next week. We will practice using the commutative and associative property of addition to solve problems with three or more addends. We will also explore the relationship between addition and subtraction using the inverse relationship of addition and subtraction. We will also solve subtraction problems with the counting back on a numberline strategy before moving to more mental strategies for subtraction. For additional practice students can make use of the second grade E skills on IXL.
Science: In Science this week, we will discuss what would happen if we didn’t have skulls. We will watch short videos, hold class discussions, make predictions in our science notebooks, and complete a short project around this topic. We will also name different bones that make up our skulls.
Language Arts: The grammar lesson this week will help students compare imperative (.) and exclamatory (!) sentences. Our Mentor Sentence skill will be to sort common and proper nouns using a sentence from Officer Buckle and Gloria. During Writing Workshop, students will finish up their personal narratives! The students are very excited by these, and have been working very hard. Once finished, students will work on a fall themed writing and art activity for creative writing practice.
Reading: This week we will use the story The Strongest One to identify facts and details in a text. We will use the words Who, What, Where, When, Why and How to support us as we ask and answer essential questions to find facts and details. The Spelling words contain diagraphs (two letters that work together to make one sound → sh, th, ch, wh, ck). In addition to our Reading Street Story, we will supplement and enjoy some Halloween-Themed Read Alouds.
Social Studies: This week we will learn about the election process, read a couple of election-themed picture books, and discuss election vocabulary. We will also discuss and describe voting as a right and responsibility. We will have our own mock election based on characters from our election picture books.
Religion: Our focus in Religion this week will be around the leaders of the Catholic church. We will identify Peter as the first pope, discuss the roles of the pope and bishops, and read a picture book about the Pope. Additionally, we will describe how Jesus taught in parables to explain ways of growing closer to God.
Spelling List: (a hard copy will also be sent home Monday)
Additional Reminders:
Week of 10/19 - 10/23
Math: This week, we will start Chapter 3 in our GoMath! Textbooks. This chapter will focus mostly on addition facts. We will learn how to use doubles facts as a strategy for finding the sums of near doubles facts. We will also recall sums for basic addition and subtraction facts using properties and strategies. We will wrap up our week in math by completing a lesson about using the make-a-ten strategy to solve for addition problems that have a two-digit addend. These strategies will help us with our fluency as we work up to addition with two and three digit numbers later on this year.
Reading: This week, we will continue practicing the skill of identifying the main idea and details of a story to comprehend non-fiction texts. We will practice our High Frequency Sight Words, Amazing Vocabulary Words, and spelling words. The students will have their spelling test on words inflected endings ( -ed and -ing) Tuesday, October 20th (the list was sent home last week).
Science: We are going to take a short break from Science due to this being a short week.
Language Arts: This week, we work on/focus on identifying, writing, and using the proper punctuation for declarative vs. interrogative sentences. During writing, students will edit, revise, and publish their personal narratives. We will finish the week with a lesson to practice alphabetical order.
Religion: This week, we will learn about All Saints Day, why we celebrate it, and why it is important. Students will discuss examples of Saints, and write a prayer to the saints to finish up the week.
Social Studies: This week, we will complete our Chapter 1 review on Monday and Tuesday and take our test on Wednesday Oct. 21st. You can view the study guide that we will complete in class here. Students will be able to use their Study Guide and Social Studies notebooks for the test.
