Week at a Glance 10/12/20-10/16/20

Math: This week, we will review for our Chapter 2 test which will be on Thursday Oct. 15th. (A review will be sent home on Tuesday with your child) Students will recall and practice the concepts we have been focusing on in this chapter. We will also spend some time after the test starting our first iReady lesson in math. This online program is differentiated to match each students’ math level, based on an assessment they took through the program.

Reading: This week, we will start a new unit in our Reading Street books. We will shift our focus to using the main idea and details of a story to comprehend non-fiction texts. We will use the story: A Walk in the Dessert to practice this skill along with other texts to supplement. We will practice our High Frequency Sight Words, Amazing Vocabulary Words, and spelling words. The students’ list will be sent home Tuesday. 

Science: We are going to take a short break from Science these next two short weeks in order to finish up Chapter 1 in Social Studies before Parent Teacher Conferences.

Language Arts: This week, we work on a new mentor sentence from the book, Officer Buckle and Gloria as we notice the proper nouns and punctuation used by the author, label the kind of sentence it is, imitate the author’s style to write a similar sentence, and revise the sentence. We will focus on identifying and writing declarative and interrogative sentences. During writing, students will start planning the beginning, middle, and end of their narratives. We will start to draft and edit these narratives as well.

Religion: This week, we will describe Jesus Christ as our Savior, and describe ways that Jesus has showed his love for everyone. We will learn about different miracles that Jesus performed to show his love for us.  

Social Studies: This week, we will continue to compare events from long ago in the past and events that have happened recently today. Students will use primary and secondary sources to find out about their family history. The students will read information from their textbooks and practice using their new vocabulary words for the week: Primary Source, Artifact, Oral history, Secondary Source.

Week At A Glance 10/05/20 -10/09/20

Week At A Glance Oct. 5-9

Math: This week, we will continue with Chapter 2 and developing understanding of 3-digit numbers. Students will practice skip counting by 10’s and 100’s and solve for 10 more, 10 less, 100 more, and 100 less than a given 3-digit number. Students will also compare number values with symbols  < (less than) , > (greater than), and = (equal to). 

Reading: This week, we will continue describing characters, but focus more on character feelings and traits. We will practice our High Frequency Sight Words, Amazing Vocabulary Words, and spelling words. The students’ list will be sent home with the circled words that the student should focus on. This list will extend the students’ practice with blends.. 

Science: This week, we will start a new Mystery Science unit to learn about plant diversity. Students will explore three different ways that seeds are spread (water, wind, and animals). We will watch videos and develop a simple model (glider, rotocopter, or spinner) that shows the movement of different types of seeds as they fall from trees.

Language Arts: This week, we will continue to work with our mentor sentence from the book, Whoever You Are as we revise the sentence and practice writing a sentence that matches the author’s style. We will also continue to identify the predicates of sentences. During writing, students will use their knowledge from the first weeks of school up until now about how to describe characters, setting, feelings/emotions, and attributes to start planning their own personal narrative

Religion: This week, we will learn about the 10 Commandments. We will discuss how each commandment can be thought of as either love of God or love of neighbor. We will identify which commandments fall in each of these categories. Students will also discuss examples of following the 10 commandments that connect to their personal lives. We will also explain what it means to be faithful to God and what it means to obey our parents.

Social Studies: This week, we will compare events from long ago in the past and events that have happened recently today. Students will demonstrate their understanding of past and present by sorting pictures of items from the past and the present. The students will read information in their textbooks, complete a time capsule activity, and practice using their new vocabulary words for the week: history, ancestor, and culture

    • This includes sight words, spelling patterns, and comprehension questions based on a reading passage.

  • Please empty your child’s Friday folder and send it back with him/her on Monday.

Weekend Homework

Week at a Glance 9/28/20-10/2/20

Math: We will continue working on Chapter 2 in GoMath! This week focuses on numbers to 1,000. We will practice reading and writing numbers in standard form, word form, expanded form. We will use equivalent representations of 3-digit numbers. Students will complete the mid-chapter check on Wednesday for a grade to see how well they are understanding the concepts of Chapter 2 so far. 

Reading: This week, we will read a story called Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night.  We will be focusing on describing the characters, settings, and events of the plot in fictional stories. Our spelling list will contain words with consonant blends at the beginning and ends of the words (br, sk, st, etc.). We will continue to add more Amazing Words to our vocabulary and practice new High-Frequency Sight words.

Science: We will explore the reasons why leaves change color in the fall with videos, and activities from our Mystery Science Curriculum. On Thursday, we will be completing an activity with leaves. If your child wants to bring a colorful leaf from home for the leaf activity, please send it in with him/her on Thursday. 

Language Arts: We will continue working on identifying and writing complete sentences using subjects and predicates. We will make observations and model our own writing after a mentor sentence from Whoever You Are (Mem Fox). We will also use this sentence to identify verbs. In writing, we will continue lessons about Personal Narrative writing and students will practice describing places, people, and objects with specific attributes (such as color, shape, size, etc.). We will also practice handwriting in the Sunform Handwriting Book.

Religion: This week’s lesson teaches us about Ordinary Time. We will learn about the meaning and importance of Ordinary Time. W will discuss different ways that we can grow during this liturgical season. We will discuss what Jesus meant when he told his disciples he was the “Bread of Life”. 

Social Studies: We will discuss family traditions this week. We will expand our vocabulary about families and review the vocabulary we have discussed in last week’s lessons. We will also practice creating a timeline to go along with a discussion of past, present, and future.
