  1. Read or listen and follow along on pages 52-53. Click here to listen.
  2. Do the Reading Check on p. 53 and upload a picture to Seesaw.
  3. Watch Brain Pop video- Migration
  4. In your Social Studies Notebook, do Vocabulary Squares for these words:

Migrate - to move from one place to another (connection - birds, butterflies, etc.)

Harbor - safe place near land where ships are tied up

Evidence - facts and information that a

Part Two: 
  1. Complete the Lesson Review: Where People Live activity on Google Classroom from Savvas. 
  2. Watch Brain Pop Video - Ellis Island

Week at a Glance 12/07-12/11

 

 Reading:  We will practice identifying the Author’s Purpose of texts and short paragraphs that we read. We will practice our Amazing Words, High Frequency Words, and Spelling words everyday. The new spelling list will have contractions.

Language Arts: This week we will work on using and identifying proper nouns. During Writer’s Workshop, we will brainstorm ideas for winter activities we enjoy. We will begin rough drafts of these winter activities. We will also continue to practice handwriting in the Sunform Handwriting Book.

Math: We will finish up Chapter 4 in GoMath on adding multiple 2-digit numbers. We will spend time on Wednesday and Thursday reviewing all the concepts from Chapter 4 before taking the chapter test on Friday. Please see the Study Guide for more information about additional ways to help your child prepare for the test.

Religion: As we enter the 2nd week of Advent, we will spend time during class celebrating Mary, the mother of Jesus. We will learn about Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Immaculate Conception while we honor and understand Mary’s importance during the Christmas season. 

 Social Studies: We will discuss why people have moved to the United States from other parts of the world. Our key vocabulary terms will include: migrate, harbor, and evidence. We will also review the concept of primary sources as we learn about Ellis Island in New York.

Science: In a Winter addition of Mystery Science, we will learn about, observe, and make snowflakes. These activities will help students to  see how the shape of snowflakes causes them to look like the color of light that is shining on them. We will observe and notice that all snowflakes are unique and different.

  • No School on December 14th- Teacher in-service 

  • 12 Days of Giving-Please consider participating in the 12 Days of Giving. You received an email from Mrs. Lombardo and/or St. Joseph School about this event in which each day you “take” an item from your pantry (or collect all the items from the grocery store) and donate all 12 items on Saturday, December 12th from 8-10am to the St. Joseph Food Pantry. The 12 items include: jelly, corn flakes, cookies, pasta sauce, apples, bread, butter, tortillas, mixed veggies, fruit cocktail, pineapple slices, pork n beans. Students who donate will be entered into a raffle for a prize. 

  • Continue to check the class webpage daily for posts about Google Meet times, assignments, checklists, and announcements.

Welcome back! I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving weekend. Here is tonight's homework:
 
1. Read 20 minutes and complete a row on the December Reading Log for 11/30
 
2. Practice Spelling words (Test on Friday) The students have a list with contractions --> the apostrophe needs to be in the correct spot for Friday's test.  "I'm"and "I'll" should be the only words with capital letters.

Thank you so much for the video thank you's of your children that the 2nd grade room parents put together. I have enjoyed teaching them so much this year and could not be more happy to be a part of the St. Joes Community. Finally, thank you for your continued support at home and for playing a crucial role in your child's education.

Week at a Glance

Week of November 23-27, 2020

This week is a short week with Monday and Tuesday as school days before Thanksgiving break.

  • Reading: We will use Thanksgiving stories and activities to review reading comprehension strategies we have been using in previous weeks.
  • Writing: We will discuss what gratitude means, and write acrostic poems and letters to our family members.
  • Math: We will continue with one more lesson on adding with regrouping. We will also complete the mid-chapter checkpoint. 
  • Religion: We will discuss the sacrament of Eucharist to the holiday of Thanksgiving.
  • Science: We will discover the purpose of the gobble on a turkey and why it is red.
  • Social Studiesno Social Studies this week

Weekend Homework

 

Students do not have homework over the weekend. If they read, they can fill our their reading logs to keep track of their reading. 
 
Reading Logs are due on 11/24. New Reading Logs for December will be passed out on Monday, November 30th.
