Peek At Our Week August 27, 2018 - August 31, 2018

Religion – Unit 1 – God Made People.  Lesson 2 - God Made My Family.  We learn understand how family members love and help one another.  We will know that Jesus, Mary and Joseph are the Holy Family.  We will appreciate what our individual family members do for us.  We will also desire to show love and concern for our family members. 

OWL (Opening the World of Learning): Unit 1 “Welcome New Friends” – Week 1 – “What makes each of us special?” We will meet Ollie, our Word Bird. Concept words boy, classroom, different, girl, grow, same. Amazing words favorite, frown, grin, confuse, exciting, nervous. We will focus on phonological awareness with letter and environmental sounds.  We will learn what is a letter, the letters in our name and others names. We will explore the concept of alike versus different.  Distinguish between letters and numbers. We will focus on the letter Aa.     We will explore how many words we know that begin with our letter of the week sound. Segment sentences into words. Recognizing the letter Aa in print and in our names. Recognizing objects around us that are circle shaped. 

Math: Sorting various materials into groups – similar and different. Count objects with Ollie.  Discover that objects can be counted.  Haves and have nots. Recognizing colors. Count with one-to-one correspondence.  Count up to 5 objects and demonstrate that the order of the counting sequence is always the same. 

Social Studies:  My BIG World with Clifford - “Hello, School!” School is starting. Everything is new! The children will learn different ways to greet old friends and new friends. This bi-monthly series makes learning fun with activities that build social development, vocabulary, language, and literacy skills in fun ways! Social-Emotional Learning Focus: new routines. Group Discussion: critical thinking. Vocabulary Theme Words: greet, friends, classroom. Following Directions: classroom environment. 

Science: Apple Science. “How does an apple react in various liquids?” We will use the scientific methodology we learned about last week to predict, investigate, and describe what occurs when apple slices are placed in different liquids. We will also have an apple tasting and use our five senses as we compare three different kinds of apples. We will then graph our findings and analyze the results. 

Afternoon Enrichment: 

Monday: We begin our Global studies with the United States of America. We will learn the meaning behind our flag and the history behind pledge of allegiance.  

Tuesday: IXL exploration. 

Wednesday: Afternoon Gym with Mrs. Beyer’s class.  Math activities. 

Thursday: Continuing our author Study with Eric Litman/James Dean and Pete the Cat. Graphing our groovy buttons.  Groovy button match game. Dancing the Cool Cat Boogie. Music CAPE with Mrs. Beyer’s class. 

Friday:  STEAM – The longest chain.  We will begin our first STEAM lesson with building community in our classroom while introducing STEAM. This activity will help our students develop critical thinking and engineering skills. They will have to plan, design, and execute as they work together and create a paper chain.
