Peek At Our Week September 30 - October 4, 2019

Religion:  Unit 2:  God Made Holy Things:  God Made Bibles.  The children will know that the Bible is God's book.  They will learn how to treat the Bible with respect and love.  The children will enjoy a story from the Bible and gain a desire to speak to God.  Seeds:  Who Need Help?  The children will recognize the sadness of people who are left out.  The children will identify ways they can share and help others.
 
Language/Literacy:  Unit 2 - Week 1:  Meet My Family.  "Who is in our families?"  Alphabet Knowledge:  differentiate uppercase and lowercase letters, recognize and name letters.  Phonological Awareness:  syllables in words. Oral Language:  use language in discussion, use complete sentences of four or more words, label and categorize words, understand meaning of words.  Motivation to Read:  engage in pre-reading and reading related activities.  Concept words:  brother, family, father, grandparent, mother, sister.  Amazing words:  busy, messy, hush, neat, freeze, sticky.  Focus letter study:

Science:  Fizzy Puffball Science:  exploring chemical reactions - combining an acid (vinegar) with a base (baking soda) results in creating an entirely new substance, carbon dioxide!  Our young scientists will be involved in following directions using scientific tools, making predictions, and using language to express observations.  OWL:  describe characteristics of people as they grow, understand that others have specific and different characteristics, practice good habits of personal health.
 
Social Studies:  In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue.  The children will be involved in celebrating this historic journey as they learn about Christopher Columbus through non-fiction text, song, story, and a craft.
 
Math:  Number & Operations - Count up to 10 items, understand that order of counting does not change the number, use concrete models and make word problems for adding up to 5 objects.  Focus shape of the Month:  Square.
 
Afternoon Enrichment:
 
Monday:"Our World and Beyond":  We will be continuing our tour of different states and visit Michigan today.  This state is the birthplace of the assembly line -thanks to Henry Ford.  We will practice working our own assembly line "building" cars.  The children will also make the state flower - the apple blossom. 
 
Tuesday:  The children will learn about number 5.  We will learn the different ways we can represent the number 5.  We will do our number 5 letter page.
Music with Mr. Showstead.
 
Wednesday:  Gym with Mrs. Beyer's class.  The children will continue their study of the letter E.  They will have to search the room looking for uppercase and lowercase letter Es.  We will try to think of as many E words as we can while stressing the two different sounds the letter can make.  The children will make an E craft.
 
Thursday:  "Bushel of Books":  We will read Where the Wild Things Are  by: Maurice Sendak. The children will explain what it means to be wild by giving examples.  We will play a game using new words learned in the book:  rumpus and gnashed.  The children will all be crowned "King of the Wild Things" or "Queen of the Wild Things."
 
Friday:STEAM - We will read Twenty One Elephants and Still Standing By: April Jones Prince.  It is the true story about the Brooklyn Bridge.  After 14 years of construction, it was complete but people still worried if it was safe.  P.T. Barnum seized the opportunity to show the people of Brooklyn that the bridge was strong enough to hold the heaviest of passengers.  The challenge today will be to make a bridge using plastic cups and craft sticks that can hold 21 elephants.
