Peek at Our Week October 1 – October 5, 2018

Religion Objectives:  

Religion Objectives: Unit 2 – God Made Holy the Bible. The children will know that the Bible is God’s book, treat the Bible with respect and love, enjoy hearing a story from the Bible and desire to speak to God. We will also learn a song about the Bible. 

Seeds – Jesus gathers us together. The children will realize they belong to a church community. The children will explore how they gather in Jesus’ name. The children will give thanks to God. 

Literacy Objectives: 

Unit 2 – Week 1 - “Meet My Family – Who is in our families?” Concept words brother, family, father, grandparent, mother, and sister. Amazing words busy, messy, hush, neat, freeze, and sticky.  Use language in a discussion. Answer questions and respond appropriately. Understand meaning of words. Concepts of print. Retell a story. Answer questions about a book. Compare and contrast stories.  Clap the syllables your name. Break words into syllables. Combine syllables into words.  If your name game. Identify letters in our names. Use language in a discussion.  Follow classroom rules and routines.  Discuss feelings and differing perspectives. Identifying uppercase letters and differentiate between big and little letters.  Letter of the Week: Ee – exploring it in our names and in our environment. 

Math Objectives: 

Subitizing concept - identifying verbally, without counting a number of objects in a set 0 to 5.  Similar and different.  Comparing to 4. Shape matching. 

Science Objectives:   

Egg science – an experiment with chemical reaction, osmosis and basic cell structure. We will make the egg’s shell disappear and transforming it into a rubber-like consistency. 

OWL - Discuss and practice good habits of personal safety. 

Social Studies Objectives: 

OWL - The children will identify good habits of nutrition and food groups.  We will use language skills to compare and contrast characteristics of families.  We will use voting as a group decision making tool, discuss safety at home and demonstrate that all people need shelter. 

Afternoon Enrichment:

Monday: G’day mate!  We continue our adventure down under with Australia! We will learn about the animals that are indigenous to Australia.  Our preschools will become kangaroos!

Tuesday: IXL exploration and Little Writer - Shapes. 

Wednesday: Afternoon Gym with Mrs. Beyer’s class.  Number 3 journal page. - learning to spell its name and represent the number three in different ways.

Thursday: We will continue our author exploration with Crockett Johnson and his Harold series.  We will use the iPad app PaintSparkle to follow Harold’s example and create art work that they would love to jump into!

Friday:  STEAM challenge – First we will read Twenty One Elephants and Still Standing by April Jones Prince.  It is the true story about the Brooklyn Bridge. After fourteen years of construction, it was complete but people still worried if it was truly safe.  P.T. Barnum seized the opportunity to show the people of Brooklyn that the bridge was strong enough to hold the heaviest of passengers. This story is the inspiration of this week’s activity challenge – making our own bridges to support twenty one elephants!
