Week at a Glance: February 12 - February 16

Reminders for this week: 
- 100th day of school Monday
- Valentine’s Day party is on Tuesday, February 13
- $1 dress down day Tuesday, February 13
- Ash Wednesday Mass is February 14
- No bus service Friday
 
Math: This week we will finish Chapter 7: Patterns and Sequences and begin Chapter 8: Fractions. We will finish Chapter 7 with covering lessons 7 and 9 on Monday and Tuesday. The students will review Chapter 7 on Wednesday and take the test on Thursday. We will begin exploring Chapter 8 on Friday. 
Objectives:
- Students will use the order of operations to solve problems. 
- Students will use tables to recognize and write equations with two or more operations. 
- Students will find factors and multiples of whole numbers. 
 
Social Studies: The students will continue to work on their Midwest Tour project. Each group of students are researching various aspects of the Midwest, such as transportation, climate, water, landmarks, and Native Americans. The students will complete the research packet with their group and work together to create a presentation on their findings. 
Objectives: 
- Apply map skills to locate geographical sites of the Midwest
- Categorize key elements of the economy, geography, transportation, history, and people of the Midwest over time. 
 
Religion:  This week we are preparing ourselves for Lent. The children will learn more about the season of Lent, the importance of praying, fasting, and giving. We will also focus on ways we can be more like Jesus. 
Objective: 
- Consider how Scripture and Traditions can deepen our understanding of the content.
 
LA/Reading: We are taking a step away from our Literacy books and moving onto a novel study this week. We will be reading Sadako and The Thousand Cranes. We will begin reading the first few chapters this week, focusing on comprehension and vocabulary. We will also explore the geography and history of Japan.
Objectives:
- Be familiar with Sadako’s story.
- Be introduced to children’s feelings under the effects of wars and disasters.
 
Spelling: Our spelling words for this week come from Sadako and The Thousand Cranes. Objectives:
- Demonstrate and apply phonetic knowledge.
- Demonstrate and apply spelling knowledge.

Homework - February 7

Thank you to Mrs. Nista and Mrs. Catanese for volunteering to help with our Art in the Box lesson today. The children enjoyed working on their pointillism project. Pictures from today are in our Art in the Box album.

Math: We are continuing Chapter 7: Patterns and Sequences. This week we are going to cover sequences, addition and subtraction rules, multiplication and division rules, order of operations, and solving equations with multiple operations. 
Objectives:
- Expand patterns and write observations about the pattern. 
- Find and use rules to write addition and subtraction equations.
- Find and use rules to write multiplication and division equations. 
- Use tables to recognize and write equations with two or more operations.

During this session we will talk about how we can ask God to heal others and what Prayers of Intercession are. We will also cover the Sacraments of Service: Matrimony and Holy Orders.

- Consider how Scripture and Traditions can deepen our understanding of the content.
 
LA/Reading: For U3W5 we will be focusing on Poetry. We will be reading a collection of different poems this week, including A Day on a Boat and I will Be a Chemist. We will focus on identifying the different elements, forms, and purposes of poetry. Our question for this week is, how do people with interests different from ours help us grow? Vocabulary for this week is: plunge, thud, thrilled, buoy, and flocked. Our language convention this week is auxiliary verbs. The test will be on Thursday. 
Objectives:
- Create mental images to deepen understanding. 
- Determine the theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text; summarize the text.
- Explain major differences between poems, drama, and prose,  and refer to the structural elements of poems and drama when writing or speaking about a text. 
- Explain figurative language such as simile, metaphor, and personification that the poet uses to create images. 
 
Spelling: U3W5 words focus on words with silent letters such as sword, heir, and debris. Students will have two word choice activities and one spelling worksheet to help them prepare for the test on Thursday.

Math: We will spend the first part of the week reviewing the concepts of Chapter 6. The students will take the Chapter 6 test on Wednesday. We will begin Chapter 7: Patterns and Sequences on Friday. 
Objectives:
- Divide with remainders and check using multiplication and addition.
- Use basic facts and patterns to divide mentally.
- Describe nonnumeric growing and repeating patterns.
- Identify, describe, and extend numeric patterns. 
 
Social Studies: We are taking our tour of the Midwest this week. We will stop in places such as St. Louis, Iowa, Kansas, South Dakota, Michigan, and Chicago. The children will learn about different historical landmarks or popular tourist attractions in these cities and states. 
Objectives: 
- Apply map skills to locate geographical sites of the Midwest
- Categorize key elements of the economy, geography, transportation, history, and people of the Midwest over time. 
 
Religion: We are starting Unit 4 in our Religion book, Sacraments. This week we will focus on the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Sacrament of the Eucharist. During these two sessions we will highlight St. Ignatius of Loyola. 
Objective: 
- Consider how Scripture and Traditions can deepen our understanding of the content.
 
LA/Reading: For U3W4 we are going to focus on answering the questions, how do new places influence us? During this week we will read two stories: Weslandia by Paul Fleischman and The Circuit by Francisco Jiménez. During the stories we will analyze the purpose and message of a story. We will compare and contrast fiction and realistic fiction stories. We will also compare first and third person writing styles. Our language convention for this week is progressive verb tenses. Vocabulary words for this week are: miserable, thrilling, recover, instinctively, and savoring. The test will be on Friday. 
Objectives:
- Explain the interactions of the characters and the changes they undergo. 
- Discuss how the author’s use of language contributes to voice. 
- Make connections to personal experiences, ideas in other texts, and society. 
- Identify and understand the use of literary devices including first- or third-person point of view. 
- Explain the author’s purpose and message within a text. 
 
Spelling: U3W4 words focus on V/CV and VC/V words. Students will have three word choice activities and one spelling worksheet to help them prepare for the test on Friday.

Math: We will start this week by reviewing the first six lessons from Chapter 6. On Tuesday the students will take the Lesson 1-6 quiz. The rest of the week we will cover lessons 7 - 10. 
Objectives:
- Determine where to place the first digit when dividing.
- Solve division problems with greater numbers.
- Solve division problems that result in quotients that have zero. 
 
Social Studies: In Social Studies this week we are going to start exploring the Midwest. We will complete a geographical activity, introduce new vocabulary, and complete the unit inquiry activity. 
Objectives: 
- Apply map skills to locate geographical sites of the Midwest
- Categorize key elements of the economy, geography, transportation, history, and people of the Midwest over time. 

Religion: We are finishing Unit 3 in religion this week by covering how we can serve God and serve others. We finished the week by completing the Unit 3 activity packet.

- Consider how Scripture and Traditions can deepen our understanding of the content.
 
LA/Reading: We are starting U3W3 in our MyView books this week. The focus is still on diversity, but the question this week is, how does music bring people together? We will read an autobiography this week, Trombone Shorty by Troy Andrews.. The vocabulary words for this week are: inspiration, create, heritage, festival, and performance.. Our language convention for this week is irregular verbs. The U3W3 test will be on Friday.
Objectives:
- Interact with sources in meaningful ways such as note taking, annotating, freewriting, or illustrations. 
- Use appropriate fluency when reading-grade level text.
- Recognize and analyze genre-specific characteristics, structures, and purposes within and across increasingly complex, traditional, contemporary, classical and diverse texts.
- Analyze the author’s use of print and graphic features to achieve specific purposes. 

Spelling: U3W3 words focus on words with final stable syllables, such as pollute.. Students will have two word choice activities and one spelling worksheet to help them prepare for the test on Friday.
