Peek At Our Week February 11 – February 15, 2019

Religion Objectives: 

Special Seasons and Day - Valentine’s Day – The children will know that on Valentine’s Day we show love.  The children will be grateful for God’s love and show love for someone.

Seeds – Jesus wants us to follow Him.  The children will recognize the activities pf fishing.  The children will recognize that Simon Peter and his friends follow Jesus.  The children will recognize stories of some followers of Jesus and themselves as followers of Jesus.

We will be taking an adventure up to our 4th Grade Prayer Buddies classroom for our Valentine visit.

Literacy Objectives:

Unit 4 – Week 3 – In the Barnyard – Why do farmers have animals?  Learn new concept words: cow, egg, hen, milk, pig, and sheep.  Learn amazing words: deal, electric, impatient, exchange and furious.  Listen to beginning sounds, letter names and sounds, disappearing letters, match uppercase and lowercase letters. Use language to participate in a discussion. Engage in conversation appropriately. Categorizing words. Name it, say it. Identifying one word of three that does not start with the same sound. Label and describe animals. Recalling story details. Our featured story is Click, Clack, Moo – Cows That Type and the Big Book Farmer John.  Phonemic awareness: breaking words into phonemes, change beginning sounds to produce new words, joining syllables.  Letter of the week: Pp.

Social Studies Objectives:

Demonstrate that all people need food and shelter. Recognizing the information is accessible through technology. Discuss fairness.

Science Objectives:

OWL - Identify and describe the characteristics of organisms and identify properties of common objects.

Valentine science experiments: Fizzy exploding hearts - chemical reaction.  Layered Love Potion - density exploration.

Math Objectives:

Numbers & operations: compare numbers in sets. Verbally identify, without counting, number of objects from 1 to 5. Use concrete models and make word problems for adding up to 5 objects. Valentine sorting, graphing and estimation.  Ten frames numbers 5 – 10. Counting and matching numbers 1 – 10. Patterning.

Afternoon Enrichment:

Monday: Happy Chinese New Year! We will be reading stories about the Chinese New Year. We will compare and contrast American New Year to Chinese New Year. We will make our own Chinese Dragons and discuss real dragons that exist in the world today. The children will receive their very own Good Luck coins in red envelopes just like the children in China receive for the New Year. We will also learn to write our numbers 0 – 10 in Chinese!

Tuesday: IXL Math. Different ways to make 5.

Wednesday: Media CAPE with Mrs. Beyer’s class. Number 17 exploration – forming the number correctly, the letters in its name, identifying the number 17 and counting to 17.  Valentine syllable identification and counting.

Thursday: We will explore all the Love Monster stories by Rachel Bright. The children will create their own love monster.  We will also play “Where is the monster?” describing his location using positional words.

Friday:  STEM Valentine Optical Illusion. A thaumatrope is a simple optical illusion toy that was popular in the 19th century.  It is simply a piece of strong paper with a image drawn on both sides and attached two rubber bands as a means to spin it.  When spun, the two images appear to merge or blend due to the persistence of vision.  Music with Mr. Showstead.
