Week at a Glance: January 29 - February 2

Math: We will spend the first part of the week reviewing the concepts of Chapter 6. The students will take the Chapter 6 test on Wednesday. We will begin Chapter 7: Patterns and Sequences on Friday. 
Objectives:
- Divide with remainders and check using multiplication and addition.
- Use basic facts and patterns to divide mentally.
- Describe nonnumeric growing and repeating patterns.
- Identify, describe, and extend numeric patterns. 
 
Social Studies: We are taking our tour of the Midwest this week. We will stop in places such as St. Louis, Iowa, Kansas, South Dakota, Michigan, and Chicago. The children will learn about different historical landmarks or popular tourist attractions in these cities and states. 
Objectives: 
- Apply map skills to locate geographical sites of the Midwest
- Categorize key elements of the economy, geography, transportation, history, and people of the Midwest over time. 
 
Religion: We are starting Unit 4 in our Religion book, Sacraments. This week we will focus on the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Sacrament of the Eucharist. During these two sessions we will highlight St. Ignatius of Loyola. 
Objective: 
- Consider how Scripture and Traditions can deepen our understanding of the content.
 
LA/Reading: For U3W4 we are going to focus on answering the questions, how do new places influence us? During this week we will read two stories: Weslandia by Paul Fleischman and The Circuit by Francisco Jiménez. During the stories we will analyze the purpose and message of a story. We will compare and contrast fiction and realistic fiction stories. We will also compare first and third person writing styles. Our language convention for this week is progressive verb tenses. Vocabulary words for this week are: miserable, thrilling, recover, instinctively, and savoring. The test will be on Friday. 
Objectives:
- Explain the interactions of the characters and the changes they undergo. 
- Discuss how the author’s use of language contributes to voice. 
- Make connections to personal experiences, ideas in other texts, and society. 
- Identify and understand the use of literary devices including first- or third-person point of view. 
- Explain the author’s purpose and message within a text. 
 
Spelling: U3W4 words focus on V/CV and VC/V words. Students will have three word choice activities and one spelling worksheet to help them prepare for the test on Friday. 
Objectives:
- Demonstrate and apply phonetic knowledge.
- Demonstrate and apply spelling knowledge.
