Online Accounts & COPPAAs part of our curriculum, students will use free or paid, educationally appropriate websites or apps (RazKids, IXL, Google, XL Math, Adobe Spark, etc…), some of which will require that each student have an individual user account. Prior to creating student accounts, SJCS will review the privacy policies of such websites in advance of their use to determine if the online tool is compliant with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) of 1998. In compliance with COPPA, any person under the age of 13 must receive explicit parental permission in order to sign up for an online service, unless that person is part of a subscribing school that provides COPPA consent on behalf of parents. (For more information regarding COPPA, visit this site:
http://bit.ly/2Iq6KS3 ) SJCS will provide such consent on behalf of parents. The law permits schools such as ours to consent to the collection of personal information on behalf of all of its students, thereby eliminating the need for individual parental consent given directly to the website operator. In order to create such accounts, SJCS may upload certain ‘directory information’ to the provider, generally the student’s name, school, and grade level.
If you need assistance accessing some of your student's online accounts, please contact your child's teacher and they will be able to help you or put you in contact with the appropriate staff member, Thank you.
