Week at a Glance 4/29/24-5/4/24

Week at a Glance

Week of April 29, 2024-May 4, 2024

Math: We will wrap up our short chapter on Money. We will spend Monday continuing to review, and then the students will take their test on Tuesday. Students should continue practicing identifying pictures of coins, skip counting coin amounts, and finding the total value of collections of coins. Students should also be prepared to solve word problems involving coins. After the chapter on Money, we’ll proceed to the chapter on Time (another short chapter). Students will identify time to the nearest hour, half hour, and quarter hour. They have seen clocks quite a bit on their 5-a-day morning work, so hopefully we’ll jump right in with a good foundation.

Phonics (Fundations): We will finish up our Unit on words with ou and ow spelling patterns. Students should continue practicing the following trick words: Thursday, Saturday, Wednesday, bought, brought, piece. Students will take their Unit 14 assessment on Wednesday, and then the remainder of the week will focus on Unit 15 and words with the /oo/ sound of oo, ue, ew, and ou. New trick words will be January, February, and July.

Reading and Writing (Wit & Wisdom): We will return to identifying the main topic of different sections in an informational text as we continue our module on the Civil Rights Movement. Students will also be able to give examples of Civil Rights in order to understand the importance of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Additionally, students will compare a book and video about Martin Luther King, Jr. and record their knowledge in a chart. Finally, they will notice similarities in the words “segregation” and “integration” in order to determine the words’ meanings. *The Civil Rights Movement is a heavy topic, but we are doing our best to address it with great care.s

Science: None - We will be dedicating extra time to Religion this week for First Communion preparation. Science will resume the week of May 6th.

Social Studies: None - We will be dedicating extra time to Religion this week for First Communion preparation.

Religion: We are in the final preparation for First Communion, and what a week do we have coming up. We will spend extra time practicing for the Eucharist prayer service, the Godparents Day prayer service, and the First Communion Mass. We are so blessed to celebrate this special time together! Additionally, we will continue practicing our Mass responses and reflecting on the gift of receiving Jesus in the Eucharist.

Tests and Quizzes:

  • Math Chapter 8 Money Quiz = Tuesday, 4/30
  • Phonics Unit 14 Assessment (ou, ow) = Wednesday, 5/1

Additional Reminders:

  • Please take your children to Mass over the weekend. We are so close to First Communion, and it is the best way to prepare our hearts and to be ready to say all of the Mass responses. Thank you for being the primary catechists for your children.
  • No School = Friday, 4/26 → Professional Development Day for teachers
  • ABC Countdown begins Tuesday, 4/30 → Please see the paper in your child’s Friday folder with information about what to expect each day.
  • All School Mass = Tuesday, 4/30, at 8:30am
  • Eucharist Prayer Service = Tuesday, 4/30, at 5pm → in the Koenig Center
    • This event is just for students and one or two parents. This is not an event for the whole family.
  • Godparents’ Day = Friday, 5/5, at 12:30pm
    • Please remind your child’s godparents (or substitutes) to bring the letter for him/her.
    • Please also let the godparents know to meet us over in the church at 12:15pm.
    • This is for the students and their godparents (or substitutes) - this event is not for the whole family.
    • Students should return to school after the prayer service.
  • First Communion = Saturday, 5/6, at 10:00am (Please note there are no assigned seats.)
    • Students will be able to have family members sit in one pew in the front of the church. If there are extra family members or friends, please have those guests sit towards the sides or the back (not center section) to allow for all students to have a pew in the main section of the church. Thank you!
  • With all of the special events coming up in the next couple of weeks, every student will either have a special job during Godparents’ Day, the Eucharist Prayer Service, First Communion Mass, and/or morning prayer at school. If your child has a reading to do, please practice it with him/her, and we will also spend time practicing at school.
