Welcome to 2nd Grade with Mrs. Macdonald!

I am a Florida native and received my BA in Psychology with a minor in Spanish from the University of South Florida. After graduation, I pursued my Masters of Education through the University of Notre Dame’s ACE Service through Teaching Program and have been an educator for the last fourteen years. Additionally, I earned my English as a New Language endorsement through the University of Notre Dame in 2012. I taught at a Catholic school in Kansas City, Kansas, and I then moved to Chicago in 2010 where I spent eight years teaching second grade at a Catholic school in Pilsen. I am excited to be back for my fifth year of teaching in this beautiful school community.

In my free time, I enjoy running, reading, singing, traveling, and spending quality time with my family and friends. I could not imagine teaching anywhere else but a Catholic school, where I can share my faith with my students and watch them grow in their own relationships with God. I am especially looking forward to preparing my students for the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion.

Unit 1 Week 4 Reading Test - Note

Just a quick note:

Next week's reading test - "Supermarket" - will have 2 additional points added in Power School. There were two questions that caused some confusion for the majority of students, so I am throwing out those questions. (The actual tests that your student will take home next week will not show the additional points, but the points are in the grade book.)

Week at a Glance for September 24th

Week at a Glance

Week of September 24 - 28, 2018

Math: We are starting a new chapter in Math. This one will include using various tables and charts to analyze and collect data. The first lessons look at pictographs and bar graphs. We will also continue working on our daily spiral review lessons in our Simple Solutions books.

Science: Please visit Ms. Papagianis’s page for Science information

Language Arts: We are working on identifying Author’s Purpose when we read (as that can affect how we read stories). The students will examine the following reasons for authors to write: to persuade, to inform, and to entertain. Our vocabulary words focus on how prefixes and suffixes can change the meanings of words. Our spelling words have vowel teams ou, ow, oi, and oy. In Writing, we are working on sensory and feeling words and how these can enhance our personal narratives.

Reading: Our story this week is Rows and Piles of Coins. It is a realistic fiction story. We will discuss Author’s Purpose and also the structure of the story. We will use additional texts throughout the week for practice as well.

Social Studies: We will compare three types of communities: rural, urban, and suburban. We will complete some work in our textbooks, as well as watch a video and display information about the communities in a graphic organizer.

Religion: We will continue learning about the 10 Commandments, how we can use our conscience to inform our choices, and how we can set examples of following God’s law for others.

Your child will have a Spelling and a Reading test on Friday. You can find the spelling list on the Spelling tab. The Reading test goes with our story and vocabulary terms of the week.

Additionally, I will be testing students’ reading levels with our F & P leveling system. As soon as I complete the testing, I will communicate your child’s reading zone with you to help you find “good fit” books at home. Thank you for your help!

Week at a Glance for September 17th

Week at a Glance

Week of: September 17-21, 2018

Math: We are finishing up Chapter 1 in our math books. We will review for our test and take the test by Wednesday or Thursday of this upcoming week. Please review addition and subtraction strategies with your child. We will have a test review in class, which your child will bring home. Please review these problems with your child. If s/he understands the process of how to solve them, s/he should do well with similar problems on the assessment.

Science: Due to i-Ready testing, we will not have Science and Social Studies this week. These will resume next week.

Language Arts:  We are working on developing and identifying setting in our narrative writing. We will focus on sensory details and one moment in time. Our spelling list works on vowel teams oa, oy, ow, ea, ee, ai, ay. *One additional way to practice these words is to make a word sort - have your child sort the words into the vowel teams to see similarities between list words in order to help him/her spell.* (Index cards are helpful for this activity!)

Reading: This week we will read an informational text entitled “Supermarket.” We will work on comparing and contrasting information in nonfiction texts using organizers such as lists and Venn Diagrams.

Social Studies: Due to i-Ready testing, we will not have Science and Social Studies this week. These will resume next week.

Religion:  We will discuss God’s laws, especially in light of the 10 Commandments. We will use these laws to help us inform our own choices in how we treat God and others.

Tests and Additional Announcements:

Your child will have a Spelling and a Reading test on Friday. You can find the spelling list on the Spelling tab. The Reading test goes with our story and vocabulary terms of the week.

The Math test will be spread out over two class periods, most likely Wednesday and Thursday or Wednesday and Friday. We will start a new chapter on graphing and data collection next week.

We will have our i-Ready testing this week in Reading and Math. There is no preparation needed for these tests. Just make sure your child is getting enough sleep.

Please continue to send in peanut-free, dry snacks with your child for snack time.
