Religion: God Made Me. The children will express an understanding that God the Father made all people. The children will show gratitude that God made them and will grow in self-esteem. The children will show respect for all people.
Language/Literacy: **This year we will be using the Heggerty Phonics Program. The instructional focus is on the phonemes or sounds we hear in words. Lessons are an oral and auditory warm-up to phonics instruction. Students isolate, blend, segment, and manipulate sounds in spoken words. This is a 35 week program which is broken up into segments. The first segment is 6 weeks. Lesson Overview: Weeks 1-6; Students will gain an understanding of rhyme by hearing and repeating rhyming words. Students will isolate the initial sound in spoken words with focused consonant sounds. Students will learn to blend two works into a compound word. Students will isolate the final sound they hear in a spoken word with focused consonant sounds. Students will learn to segment a compound word into two individual words. Learning Goals- Alphabet knowledge: recognize letters, concept of a letter, distinguish between letters and non letters. Phonological awareness/listening comprehension: discriminate and sequence environmental sounds, respond appropriately. Writing: writing our names. Listening comprehension: expanding word knowledge, following directions. Oral language: expand understanding of concepts. Following Directions: the children will follow directions and answer questions to create their own apple. Focused letter study Aa.
Math: Let's start counting. Geometry: sorting materials into similar and different groups, flat shapes - circle. Number and Operations: know that items can be counted, count with one count per item, count up to 5 items, recognize colors, the order of counting is always the same. Data Analysis: the children will vote for their favorite apple. The class will then count each category and tally the results.
Science: Apple Science: Investigating an apple. Preschoolers will use their senses to make observations of their apple. They will identify characteristics of apples. They will be introduced to parts of an apple. They will compare their apple to others and express similarities/differences. Data analysis: graphing our favorite apples.
Social Studies: Scholastic: My BIG World Clifford: “Let’s visit an apple farm”: Knowledge focus: apples, farms. Words to know: tractor, farmer. Skills we’re working on: fine-motor skills, collaboration.
Afternoon Enrichment:
Monday: “Our World and Beyond”: We will learn about the area surrounding us by going on an individual scavenger hunt around our classroom. We will use pictures and verbal directions to find specific items in the classroom. The children will look at a map and see how it relates to the real world setting. Children will create a simple map of the classroom. We will read How I Became a Pirate By: Melinda Long and David Shannon, a book about a boy named Jeremy Jacob who meets up with some pirates and follows a map to go on a treasure hunt.
Tuesday: We will continue our study of the letter Aa. How many letters can we think of that begin with the letter A? The children will use their observation skills to play a memory game with A items. We will work on our letter A page for our letter journal.
Wednesday: We will begin our exploration of the numbers 1-20. The children will represent the number one with a symbol, tally and the written word. The children will explore and identify numbers using 10 frames and manipulatives. The children will complete their number 1 journal page.
Thursday: “Bushel of Books”: We will read Elmer the Elephant By: David McKee. This is a cute book that celebrates individuality and the power of laughter! Concepts of Print: Front of the book, back of the book, title, author, where to start reading. New Vocabulary: unique. The children will create their own Elmer the Elephant and determine what makes him so unique.
Friday: STEAM: Teamwork. We will read Rex Wrecks It By: Ben Clanton. This is a wonderful story about what we can do if everyone works together. The children each put together a paper chain. All the links from each child will then be put together by the teacher. The children will observe that each individual piece of chain is a part of one very long chain.
