Welcome to 2nd Grade with Mrs. Macdonald!

I am a Florida native and received my BA in Psychology with a minor in Spanish from the University of South Florida. After graduation, I pursued my Masters of Education through the University of Notre Dame’s ACE Service through Teaching Program and have been an educator for the last fourteen years. Additionally, I earned my English as a New Language endorsement through the University of Notre Dame in 2012. I taught at a Catholic school in Kansas City, Kansas, and I then moved to Chicago in 2010 where I spent eight years teaching second grade at a Catholic school in Pilsen. I am excited to be back for my fifth year of teaching in this beautiful school community.

In my free time, I enjoy running, reading, singing, traveling, and spending quality time with my family and friends. I could not imagine teaching anywhere else but a Catholic school, where I can share my faith with my students and watch them grow in their own relationships with God. I am especially looking forward to preparing my students for the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion.

Week at a Glance 11/13/23-11/17/23

Week at a Glance

Week of November 13-17, 2023

Math: We will finish up our chapter on 2-digit addition next week as we work toward the “traditional algorithm” with regrouping. We will add three or four two-digit numbers. Students will also be able to rewrite horizontal problems vertically in order to solve them. Finally, they will make a model to solve problems.

Phonics (Fundations): We will read and spell words that have vowel-consonant-e (VCE) syllables. We will also review the long vowel sounds (e.g., hop vs. hope, cap vs. cape, etc.). The new trick words for the week that we will work on reading and spelling are: only, house, move. We will read a story about Babe Ruth to work on our fluency and comprehension, and we will also compare the spelling options of s and z when making the /z/ sound (e.g., rose vs. maze).

Reading and Writing (Wit & Wisdom): We are at the end of our first module of Wit & Wisdom, which has been all about change and its impact on people, animals, and nature. Students will complete a vocabulary assessment in which words are given in context and they must decide if the word is being used correctly in the sentence. They will also be writing an informational paragraph about how change impacts animals or plants based on evidence from texts we have read in class. They will edit, revise, and publish their paragraphs for a class booklet.

Science: Next week, students will explore the phenomenon of flash floods. They will create an explanation of why these severe weather events are more or less likely in different regions using different mapping techniques and information gathered from our Mystery Science videos and discussions.

Social Studies: None - see Science

Religion: We will move to Session 9 of our Finding God textbooks, which is entitled “Jesus Cares for Us.” In this session, we will read the parable of the lost sheep, identify Jesus as the “Good Shepherd”, and describe how Jesus cares for us through the leaders of the church. Students will also be able to define the terms deacon and psalm.

Week at a Glance 11/6/23-11/10/23

Week at a Glance

Week of November 6-10, 2023

Math: We will move into Chapter 3 of our Math textbooks, and the main focus of the chapter is adding multi-digit numbers. We will work up to the traditional algorithm, but we will also learn some valuable ways to break apart numbers with expanded form and also count on with number lines to be able to do more mental math (and hopefully make fewer mistakes). We will continue to practice our addition and subtraction fact fluency, as this is essential foundational knowledge for the multi-digit addition and subtraction.

Phonics (Fundations): We will continue working on spelling and reading multisyllabic words, including words that end in -ic. Students will mark up the syllables, including marking the digraphs, blends, glued sounds, and short vowels. We have also been making connections between words as we add suffixes (e.g., invent/ invented/ invents/ inventor/ invention). We will review trick words against, know, knew and practice new trick words often, once, always.

Reading and Writing (Wit & Wisdom): Students will determine the central message of a text. Additionally, they will plan and draft an informational paragraph. They will also be able to discuss how changes in fall impact people. Finally, students will demonstrate an understanding of our module vocabulary terms by analyzing correct or incorrect use in context.

Science: We will continue learning about water, weathering, and erosion as we turn to the question: Why is there sand at the beach? Students will investigate the effects of rocks tumbling in a river. Based on their observations with videos and a hands-on activity, they will construct an opinion for why there is sand at a beach.

Social Studies: None - see Science

Religion: We will cover Session 8 next week, which focuses on how Jesus calls us to love. We will discuss the leaders of our church (pope, cardinals, bishops, priests) and how they guide us in our faith. We will also compare priests and bishops to shepherds, and we will be able to define “crosier” as a curved bishop’s staff.
