Welcome to First Grade with Mrs. Fisher!

Mrs. Fisher resides in Vernon Hills with her husband and five children.  Her husband manages Orbit Ice Arena in Palatine and is also a hockey coach.   She has two rescue dogs, a cat, a tortoise and a gecko.  Mrs. Fisher enjoys cooking, gardening, DIY projects, walking her dogs, spending time with her kids, and watching her boys play hockey and football. Mrs. Fisher attended Northeastern Illinois University and University of Phoenix where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, and she has an endorsement in Structured English Immersion for PreK-12.  Mrs. Fisher was a third grade student teacher at St. Francis de Sales School in Lake Zurich and has been a substitute teacher at St. Francis for many years.  She  has volunteered at St. Mary School in Buffalo Grove for five years as a lunch and recess monitor, created costumes for the school plays, was a “science lady” for the kindergarten class. She also helped with small reading groups or anywhere else she was needed throughout the school. Mrs. Fisher is excited to join the SJCS community!

Week at a Glance

Week of September 4-8, 2023
 
Math:  We will continue to count and connect objects with numbers, practice one-to-one counting with small objects and build number sense with number of the day.
 
Phonics (Fundations):  We will practice letter- keyword- sound for consonants g,d,s,r,p,j and for vowels a, e and also sound recognition for these letters.  We will work on correct letter formation and match letter tiles to the letter squares in alphabetical order.  
 
Reading and Writing (Wit & Wisdom):  We will learn and practice how to generate and answer questions using the story Tomas and the Library Lady, using key details from the text.  The students will learn how to identify and generate common nouns and proper nouns.  The students will retell parts of the story including key details about character, setting, problem and resolution.  The students will ask and answer questions about key vocabulary and write a narrative retelling how library books changed life for Thomas.
 
Science:  We will use a Mystery Science read-along to explore why Jada"s shadow changes over the course of a day.  Students will trace their shadows using chalk and track the shadow changes throughout the day.  We will start our unit on apples.
 
Social Studies:  We will learn about the importance of classroom community and identify student responsibilities to one another in the school community.  
 
Religion:  We will identify things that God creates and that God created everything out of love for us.  I will explain that we show our thanks and love to God by caring for his creations.  We will define and explain Amen, creation, Creator, God, and saint.

August 28th- September 1st

ELA

SCIENCE

  • To deepen understanding of two foundational scientific practices: making observations and asking questions. In the activity, Curiosity Challenge, students “train their brains” by observing an everyday object and asking questions like a scientist would
  • To investigate what it takes to make a stationary object’s shadow move. In the activity, Moving Shadows, students use flashlights and paper gnomes to explore how moving the position of a light makes shadows move. Students relate these observations to shadows changing throughout the day and the Sun’s position moving across the sky

RELIGION

  •  To identify things that God creates
  • To tell that God created everything out of love for us
  • To explain that we show our thanks and love to God by caring for his creation
  • To define or explain Amen, creation, Creator, God, and saint

Students may wear regular OR gym uniform due to expected temperatures (per Mrs. Hein email yesterday).
 
Patience required with dismissal! We have many new families learning pick up procedures. If your child dismisses from Hurlburt doors, pull into the parking lot on corner of Park Place & Hurlburt. Follow the line!
