Bienvenidos de regreso a la escuela!
(Welcome back-to-school!)

My name is Giselle Leonhardt, and I’m excited to welcome you to a new school year! I have the privilege of serving as one of the 8th-grade homeroom teachers and of teaching Spanish to students in grades 5–8 for the third consecutive year. In my role as homeroom teacher, I look forward to walking alongside your child as they experience the many special milestones of their final year at St. Joseph’s—from Confirmation to graduation.

Spanish was my first language growing up, so I feel incredibly blessed to continue sharing my love of the language and culture with your children. Over the past seven and a half years at St. Joseph’s Catholic School, I’ve held various teaching positions, and it has been a wonderful journey. I also have a strong personal connection to the school—one of my sons is a proud St. Joseph graduate, and my younger son is currently enrolled here.

In Spanish class, students will not only learn how to speak and understand the language but also explore the cultures and histories of Spanish-speaking countries. My goal is to help them feel confident using Spanish in real-world situations.

As a former Catholic school student myself, I truly value the faith-filled education St. Joseph’s provides, and I feel grateful to give my own children the same experience.

Outside the classroom, I love spending quality time with my husband, our two boys, and our three dogs—Leia, Rey, and Hans Solo. As a family, we enjoy traveling, going on walks, eating out, and watching movies. My favorite sport is volleyball, and I’ve had the pleasure of coaching:

  • the 6th/7th grade boys team in 2021,

  • the 7th/8th grade boys team in 2024, and

  • the 5th/6th grade boys team in 2025.

I look forward to a wonderful and blessed year ahead, filled with growth, learning, and joy. I am honored to work with your children and be a part of their journey.

Week of 10/20/25

Week of 10/20/25

5th Grade: On Wednesday October 15 Ms. Bubis’s class completed our lesson on Spanish-speaking influential leaders, and I am so proud of how much they remembered and retained! We wrapped up by matching each leader with their accomplishments, and the students did a fantastic job. Mrs. Schiff’s class will complete this lesson on Monday, October 20.

Since we didn’t get a chance to begin this topic last week due to the Pumpkin Patch and Parent-Teacher Conferences, we will start on Monday with our next unit: “¿Qué hay en tu escuela?” — “What is in your school?”

Objective: Students will learn to understand and answer the questions “¿Qué hay en tu escuela?” (What is in your school?) and “¿Qué no hay en tu escuela?” (What is not in your school?).

Students will review vocabulary words, libros, lápices, crayones, pizarra, baño, gimnasio, mochila, escritorio etc..

6th Grade:

Students began chapter in Autentico 1 - Capitulo 1A

Objective students will listen to and read about activities people like and don’t like to do. Describe their favorite activities and ask others about theirs.

Students will begin the next chapter in Autentico 1 - Capitulo 1A

7th Grade:  Students will continue with Auténtico 1 – Capítulo 3B.

Objective: Students will identify foods from different food groups and discuss their food preferences with a partner.

8th Grade: This short week, students will finish presenting their Spanish-Speaking Country Reports. I’m very proud of their effort and creativity in sharing what they’ve learned about the cultures, and geography of each country.

We will then continue with Auténtico 1 – Capítulo 6B, where students will use vocabulary and expressions related to household chores and describing their homes.

5th Grade:

Last week students learned about “What is my school like”, “How do I get there”?, and “What do I do there?” They were introduced to the Spanish pronouns; Yo,  El , Ella, Ellos, Ellas, Nosotros, Nosotras, Tu, Usted y Ustedes.

Identify:  Students are learning to read different names to identify the Subject Pronouns of El and Ella. 

  • This week students continue to work on their Pronouns packet in class, due:

6th Grade:

Para Empezar – Auténtico 1 (En la clase).

Students will prepare for the vocab quiz for Para Empezar

  • Thursday 10/9, Pear practice review of vocabulary words for the vocab quiz.
  • Friday 10/10 -Vocabulary Quiz for 6 Annunzio and 6 Brua.

7th Grade:  

This week, we will continue to complete our Influential Leader Report Presentations in class. 

  • Monday and Thursday we will wrap up the Influential Leader Report Presentations.
  • Wednesday they will watch a video on “Comida Tropical" and answer comprehension questions through Savvas.
  • Friday: Autentico 1 Book : Pages 152-153. Partner Spanish conversation practice: "Which foods do you prefer?"

8th Grade: 

We will continue to present the Country Reports this week.

  • Monday, Tuesday and Thursday we will wrap-up presentations.
  • Wednesday 8th Grade is at the Carmel Retreat at Carmel Catholic High School for the day.

Week of 9/29/25

5th Grade:

This week students will learn about What is my school like, how do I get there, and what do I do there? This week students will learn and practice their Spanish Pronouns; Yo,  El , Ella, Nostoros, Nosotras, Tu, Usted, Ustedes.

Objective: Students will compare and contrast their own school experiences with those of students in Guatemala. By watching a video from Auténtico 1 showing a typical school day in Guatemala, students will analyze similarities and differences in school routines, classroom environment.

Identify:  Students tell the name of another person and learn the subject pronouns of el and ella.

6th Grade:

Para Empezar – Auténtico 1 (En la clase).

Since we completed the chapter on Friday, I assigned two Instachecks. Students will have class time on Tuesday, September 30th, to continue working on them, and I’ll be available to help translate the questions as needed in class.

Objective:Students will listen to and read descriptions of healthy and unhealthy lifestyles.

  • They will practice exchanging information and expressing opinions about food choices and health.

  • Complete the vocabulary worksheet (pages 105 & 107).

  • Watch a video on “comida tropical" and answer comprehension questions through Savvas.

8th Grade:

Talk about household chores and write a description of a house or apartment.

Students will continue learning about a notable and influential Spanish speaker in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. They are exploring who the person is, what they are known for, and the country they are from.

This week, students have also begun working on the second portion of their flipbook, which includes:

  • Los días de la semana (Days of the week)

  • Los meses y las fechas (Months and dates)

  • Las estaciones (Seasons)

6th Grade:

Students will continue learning about a notable and influential Spanish speaker in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. They are exploring who the person is, what they are known for and the country they are from.

Para Empezar – Auténtico 1 (En la clase).

Students will continue working from the hardcover Auténtico 1 textbook.

Objective:Describe weather conditions 

Identify the seasons.

7th Grade: Hispanic Heritage Month Project

Seventh grade students are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by completing a Hispanic Influential Leader Project. Each student has selected a leader and will:

  • Create a pennant in Spanish with important facts.

  • Prepare a short slideshow presentation in English (3+ slides) to share with the class.

Pennants will be displayed outside the Spanish classroom as part of our celebration. Students will use class time to complete their projects.

Due Dates:

  • 7 Delaney / Showstead – Wednesday, October 1, 2025

  • 7 Secketa – Thursday, October 2, 2025

 

8th Grade: Hispanic Heritage Month Project

As part of our Hispanic Heritage Month celebration, 8th grade students have each selected a Spanish-speaking country for their report (e.g., Uruguay, Paraguay, El Salvador, Honduras, República Dominicana, etc.).

Each student will:

  • Create a banner in Spanish only highlighting their chosen country.

  • Prepare a Google Slides presentation, with each slide written in both Spanish and English.

  • A rubric and full project guidelines will be posted in Google Classroom. Students will have class time this week to work on their projects.

Weekof 9/15/25

Spanish Class Announcement:

Spanish class will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month from Monday, September 15 through Wednesday, October 15, 2025. During this time, we will explore Hispanic culture, learn about inspiring leaders, and discover different Spanish-speaking countries—all while having fun!

5th Grade:

For Hispanic Heritage month, each day students will learn about a notable hispanic american. Students will learn about one person, their country of heritage and what they are known for.

This week students will continue with completing the second half of their flipbook.  They will be working on their Los Numeros packet and complete the Los Numeros section of their flipbook. Towards the end of the week they will receive the packet which contains a review of the Dias de semana (Days of the week), Los meses y las fechas ( Months and dates), Las estaciones ( the four seasons)

6th Grade:

For Hispanic Heritage month, each day students will learn about a notable hispanic american. Students will learn about one person, their country of heritage, and what they are known for.

Last week students were paired in groups to review, speak and record Los numeros in Spanish via Savvas.

This week's Objective: Talk about things in the classroom and ask questions about new words and phrases.

  • Review ¿Qué hora es? What time is it?
  • Review body parts; head, eyes, ears, hand, legs, feet
  • En la sala de clases. Review vocabulary pertaining to this chapter ie; encantado, mucho gusto, hoja de papel, cuaderno, cabeza, carpeta etc..

7th Grade Hispanic Heritage Month Project

As we kick off Hispanic Heritage Month, 7th grade students will begin working on their Hispanic Influential Leader Report.

  • Each student will choose a Hispanic influential leader and complete a pennant in Spanish, filling it with important facts about their chosen person in Spanish.
  • Students will also create a slide show presentation (3 or more slides) in English, which they will present to the class.
  • Once completed, the class pennants will be proudly displayed outside of the Spanish classroom to showcase our work and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.
  • Students will work on this in class this week

8th Grade Hispanic Heritage Month Project

5th Grade:

Last week  students learned “los saludos” (greetings) and how to use them depending on the time of day. Some of the greetings we will practice include: Buenos días, buenas tardes, buenas noches, ¿Cómo te llamas?, ¿Cómo está usted?, Estoy bien, Hasta luego, Hasta pronto, ¡Chao!, and ¡Adiós!

  • Started their practice packets for “Los Saludos” practice packets and started the Benvienidos a la clase de espanol -Spanish Flipbook. This project will take a few weeks to complete. The first section of the flipbook will focus on greetings. 
  •  This week students will receive the section of “despedidas”( good-bye’)s and the “preguntas basicas" (basic questions) part of the flipbook.

 

6th Grade:

Para Empezar – Auténtico 1 (En la escuela).

Students will continue working from the hardcover Auténtico 1 textbook.

Objective: Greet people at different times of the day

  • Introduce yourself to others
  • Respond to classroom directions

Week of 9/1/25

5th Grade:

Last week, students began creating drawings to represent the activities they did over the summer. Alongside their drawings, they filled the page with vocabulary words we reviewed in class that connected to each image. We also started presentations, giving students the opportunity to share their drawings and practice speaking the vocabulary aloud.

  • This week we will wrap up student presentations of their drawings..
  • Students will also begin learning “los saludos” (greetings) and how to use them depending on the time of day. Some of the greetings we will practice include: Buenos días, buenas tardes, buenas noches, ¿Cómo te llamas?, ¿Cómo está usted?, Estoy bien, Hasta luego, Hasta pronto, ¡Chao!, and ¡Adiós!
  • In addition, students will start working on their Los Saludos practice packets and begin building their Spanish Flipbook. This project will take a few weeks to complete. The first section of the flipbook will focus on greetings, introducing oneself, and common ways to say goodbye.

6th Grade:

Para Empezar – Auténtico 1 (En la escuela).

Students will begin working from the hardcover Auténtico 1 textbook. During this unit, they will learn to:

  • Listen to greetings and announcements using Savvas
  • Read a description of the weather and a list of school supplies
  • Students will practice reading / speaking how to introduce themselves to others and practice speaking how to greet people at different times of the day. In a partner setting students will also practice speaking “see you later” and “how is it going”? 

7th - 8th Grade: 

At the end of last week students began to write a short paragraph in Spanish about what they did over the summer. The activity encourages them to apply past-tense verbs (pretérito) and vocabulary related to summer activities. Students were asked to write 4–6 sentences in Spanish answering the question: ¿Qué hiciste en el verano?  They are to use at least three different verbs in the past tense (for example: fui, viajé, nadé, comí, jugué). 

  • Students will present their paragraph with the class - Classwork posted in google classroom.

Later this week students will read a parallel short story to prepare for a review game, gaining familiarity with terms from the upcoming music video ¿Puedo ir al baño? From our new program of Senor Wooly.

  • 7th Grade students will be given the story to read in class at a Novice Low level.
  • 8th Grade students will be given the story to read in class at a Novice Mid level.

Objective: By engaging students through multiple senses, this activity helps them store new language structures effectively and helps them to remember more easily during future speaking and writing.

5th Grade


Since we had a short first week, we did not get to the “¿Quién soy?” activity. We will continue working on it this week.

  •  Students will write “Quien Soy” in Spanish describing 3 things about themselves on a card. Each time we meet, we will review one of the cards. 
  • Students will listen to the reading in Spanish and get to pick what student they think the card belongs to.
  • This week we will begin to share about their summer by drawing and labeling their pictures with Spanish vocabulary words. This fun activity helps them reconnect with the language while expressing their creativity.
  • Please have students turn in the signed Spanish Procedures form that went home last week.

6th -  8th Grades

Since we had a short first week, we did not get to the “¿Quién soy?” activity. We will continue working on it this week.

  •  “Quien Soy” Students will write in Spanish describing 3 things about themselves on a card. 
  • “Dos verdades y una mentira” - students will write in Spanish two truths and 1 lie about themselves.
  • Each time we meet, we will review one of each of the cards; the students will listen to the reading in Spanish and get to pick what student they think the cards belong to.
  • Finally we will write about “Que hiciste durante el veran”: Students will begin to write a small phase explaining what they did over the sumer in Spanish and present. This will help students ease back into Spanish after the summer break and rebuild their language skills. This may continue into next week.

Week of 8/18/2025



5th Grade

  • Introductions - go over Spanish curriculum, review procedures and expectations.

  • I begin every morning by asking Que dia es hoy, cuál es la estación (season), y cuál es la fecha (date).
  •  “Quien Soy” Students will write in Spanish describing 3 things about themselves on a card. Each time we meet, we will review one of the cards. Students will listen to the reading in Spanish and get to pick what student they think the card belongs to.
  • To kick things off, students will share about their summer by drawing and labeling their pictures with Spanish vocabulary words. This fun activity helps them reconnect with the language while expressing their creativity.

6th -  8th Grade

3rd -5th Grade:

As Monday is our last Spanish class students will enjoy a fun vocabulary game of Lotteria.


6th - 7th Grade: Monday is our last Spanish class.

Will enjoy a student favorite of Roxxem where students fill in the lyrics of a Spanish song all while listening to and reading the lyrics. Students have to fill in the correct vocabulary word that is missing in the lyrics.

4th Grade: This week students will review vocabulary words that they learned throughout the year. Vocabulary words will be reviewed using Blooket: Colores y Primavera.


5th Grade:

This week students will review adjectives, adverbs, synonyms, plural words that they learned throughout the year.


6th Grade This week students will begin Capitulo 3A Desayuno o almuerzo

  • Students will listen to and read descriptions of meals and menus.
  • Talk about foods you and others like and dislike.
  • Exchange information about food preferences.

7th Grade: 

Students have begun Capítulo 6A - En mi dormitorio

  • Identify the forms of stem-changing verbs: poder and dormir.

3rd Grade: Students will continue to identify Summer related vocabulary words in Spanish. 
3rd grade will continue to work on booklet 1 of vocabulary words in class. 
 
4th Grade:
Students will continue to identify Summer related vocabulary words in Spanish.
4th Grade will receive Booklet 1 and 2 to work on in class.
 
5th Grade:
Students will continue to identify summer vocabulary words. This week we will be working on Spanish reading comprehension packets related to Summer.
 
6th Grade:
  • This week students will take the quiz on Capitulo 2B.
  • Pear Practice is available for review on Google classroom.
  • Quiz Date: Tuesday 5/20.
  • Will begin Capitulo 3A: Desayuno o almuerzo
 
7th Grade: Students will continue with Capítulo 6A - En mi dormitorio
  • Students will start off the week by enjoying popcorn and viewing all of the Spanish project videos in the Koenig Center. 
  • Students will continue Capítulo 6A: En mi dormitorio.
  • Identify the forms of stem-changing verbs: poder and dormir.
  • Practice worksheet Page 45-46.
8th Grade:
  • This week students will take their final quiz - Capitulo 6A: En mi dormitorio.
  • Quiz Date: 8H Monday 5/19 and 8L Tuesday 5/20.
  • Will watch Disney/Pixar movie: Luca

Week of 5/12/25

3rd Grade: Students will identify Summer related vocabulary words in Spanish. 

They will receive a booklet of vocabulary words to work on in class.

4th - 5th Grade:

Students will identify Summer related vocabulary words in Spanish. They will identify and accurately use 16 vocabulary words.

They will be able to match vocabulary words with pictures.

6th Grade:

This week students will review and prepare for the quiz on Capitulo 2B.

  • Blooket available for review on Google classroom.
  • Quiz Date: Tuesday 5/20.
 

7th Grade: Students have begun Capítulo 6A - En mi dormitorio

  • Objective: exchange information while comparing opinions with a classmate using “mas que” or “menos que.”
  • Will use the superlative: to say that someone or something is the “most” or “least.”
  • Students will use the definite article (el, la, los, las) + noun + mas / menos + adjective.
  • Spanish Recipe Project Due Friday 5/16.

8th Grade:

This week students will review and prepare for their final quiz - Capitulo 6A - En mi dormitorio.

  • Quiz Date: 8H Monday 5/19 and 8L Tuesday 5/20.

Week of 5/5/25

Tuesday 5/6/25 - May Crowning.  Reminder to have the 8th graders dressed and ready at school arrival.

3rd - 5th Grade:

Students will be learning about Cinco de Mayo and how the Mexican Army defeated the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. They will learn about traditional Mexican food which is celebrated on this day. 

6th Grade:

  • Will learn about Cinco de Mayo and how the Mexican Army defeated the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.
  • Continue with Capitulo 2B - Read about a United Nations program for students.
  • Complete the chapter with an Autentico video: Vencer las molestias de la tarea.
  • Will prepare for quiz week of 5/12/25

7th Grade

  • Students are using class time to work on their Spanish recipe presentation slides and have now submitted their drafts for review.
  • Some students have received the approval to begin videotaping their recipe at home.

8th Grade
