Week at a Glance: February 26 - February 29

Math: We are continuing Chapter 8: Fractions this week, focusing on Lessons 7-9. We will begin the week covering Lesson 7 Use Benchmark Fractions to Compare and Order and then the students will take a review quiz for Lessons 3-7 on Tuesday. We will then explore Lesson 8 Problem-Solving Investigation: Use Logical Reasoning and Lesson 9 Mixed Numbers. 
Objectives: 
- Use benchmark fractions to compare and order numbers. 
- Use logical reasoning to solve problems. 
- Represent mixed numbers by decomposing them into a sum of whale numbers and unit fractions. 
 
Social Studies: We will start this week by finishing our Midwest Tour presentations in class. The children will complete the Midwest Unit by choosing four people that they think would be great faces of the ‘new’ Mount Rushmore. Each student will white a short explanation why they picked those four people and then they will create their version of Mount Rushmore on paper. 
Objectives: 
- Share information that is valuable to the class topic. 
- Communicate information to an audience in an effective and engaging way. 
 
Religion:  We are continuing to reflect on Lent during religion this week. The children will take some time to reflect on their Lenten journey so far in their Lenten Journal. We will also discuss ways we can be more like Jesus.
Objectives: 
- Prepare for Easter Sunday through reflection and reading. 
- Reflect on Lenten journey through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.
 
LA/Reading: We are starting Unit 4 this week in our Literacy books. We will begin Unit 4 Week 1 this week. Our theme for this unit is Impacts with the overall question of, how do stories shape our world? Our focus for this first week is Traditional Tales Around the World focusing on the question: how can revealing a secret make it lose its power? Our language convention for this week is pronouns. The vocabulary words for this week are: deceived, bargain, reputation, astonishment, and composure. Our story this week is a Traditional Literature story called, Can You Guess My Name? written by Judy Sierra. The U4W1 test will be on Thursday. 
Objectives:
- Demonstrate knowledge of distinguishing characteristics of well-known children’s literature such as folktales, fables, legends, myths, and tall tales. 
- Make connections to personal experiences, ideas in other texts and the larger society. 
- Explain the interactions of the characters and the changes they undergo. 
- Compare and contrast the treatments of similar themes and topics. 
- Synthesize information to create new understanding
 
Spelling: Our spelling words for this week focus on words with Greek and Latin prefixes. For example, automobile and transit. The children will complete two word choice activities and a spelling worksheet to prepare them for the spelling test on Thursday. 
Objectives:
- Demonstrate and apply phonetic knowledge.
- Demonstrate and apply spelling knowledge.
- Decode words using knowledge of prefixes.
