Art & Music

The Art Curriculum includes “Art in the Box” for children in grades K through 4, which meets every 6 weeks to study an artistic master and to replicate in artwork one aspect of his artistic style. In addition, students at all grade levels meet with an art instructor for 45 minute classes each week. Children learn basic art concepts and are introduced to art history and the work of various artists. Emphasis is on creativity and providing experience in various art media.

The Music Curriculum uses a sequential, spiraling approach that is based on national and state standards. Students will learn through singing, movement, listening, and playing basic rhythm instruments, choir chimes, and recorders at the appropriate grade levels. Each grade level has a set of learner statements outlining expectations for that grade level; these can be found on Mr. Showstead's webpage. Since music is a performing art, students will have the opportunity to participate in the Christmas Program. Music classes meet once a week for 45 minutes with the music teacher.

Instrumental music is available at an extra cost to students who participate in Band. Music Education Services provides band instruction for St. Joseph Catholic School.
