Social Studies

We have learned about different cultures. One way groups of people share their cultures is through storytelling. This week we are going to learn about folktales (sometimes known as tall tales). We will review some information together, and then you will finish with some work of your own.

  1. Watch the Part 1 video of today’s lesson (YouTube link).
    • We will review the concepts of fact and fiction, as well as discuss what a FolkTale (sometimes known as Tall Tale) is.
    • Then we will learn about Johnny Appleseed and be able to talk about parts of his story that make it a folktale (or tall tale).
  2. Watch the Part 2 video of today’s lesson (YouTube link).
    • Listen to another version of the story of Johnny Appleseed.
  3. Complete the chart on this page about the information you learned in the videos. Use information from BOTH videos to help you. (I actually recommend making a chart on your own paper so you have more space and so you do not waste printer ink.)

    • You can listen to the directions at the end of the Part 2 video.

Writing

As we near the last few weeks of school, we would like you to take some time to think about your favorite memory from 2nd grade and reasons why it was your favorite memory. Be sure to save today’s work for a special project later in the week.

  1. Gather your materials - an OREREO chart and a pencil.
  2. Think about some of the things we did this year at school. (You can write these down on the back of your chart if you find it helpful to do so.) Some ideas include:
    1. Pep rally
    2. Sock Hop
    3. Halloween party
    4. Christmas party
    5. Valentine’s Day party
    6. First Reconciliation
    7. Art in a Box
    8. Book Fair
    9. Dance Party Fridays
  3. Choose one of these (or another memory of your own) for your “Favorite 2nd Grade Memory” OREREO chart. Then write each of these in the chart. (If you write complete sentences now, it will make your work easier later in the week!)
    1. Write your opinion statement (do not include “because” yet) → The best part of Second Grade was…
    2. Write your first reason.
    3. Write your first example (that goes with your first reason).
    4. Write your second reason.
    5. Write your second example that goes with your second reason.
    6. Write your final opinion statement (a little different than your first one).
  4. You can listen to the directions here.
  5. Upload a copy of your chart to Seesaw (and remember to save the chart until Friday).

Music:

Find something musical you’ve never done before and try it!

  • Remember, it’s ok to make lots of mistakes when you’re first trying something. The important thing is just to try!
  • You can make up your own challenge, or pick one from my list.

Musical Ideas to Try:

  1. Make up a dance to your favorite song. Teach it to someone in your family! Here are some dance moves to try.
  2. Make a video of you singing a song you like and send it to me.
  3. Call someone in your family (maybe your grandparents) and ask them to sing you a song that they remember from their childhood. Maybe they could teach it to you!
  4. Find an instrument at your house and try to play it. Is there someone in your family who can show you how to get started?
  5. Make your own instrument out of something you find at your house. Here are some ideas.
  6. Figure out how to play the first part of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” Use an instrument at home or use this online piano.
  7. Make a song using this Google Doodle
  8. Make up an “online dance” using this website.

*Please make sure to watch our Variety Show that will be released on 5/20. Link to this is found on your google classroom or an email sent to your parents.

Optional-Flat Miss Lapetina Activity

Dear 2nd Graders,

I miss you so much and I miss all the fun we used to have together at school! Even though we are apart, we can still learn and explore
together. Take me with you on your adventures and be sure to document our time together! Click here for Flat Miss Lapetina!

Please take good care of me! I would hate to get lost or get chewed on by a pet (or a baby sister for that matter)! Please keep me in a safe spot when I need to rest!

Be sure to upload pictures to your Seesaw journal so I can see all of our adventures!

Sincerely,
Miss Lapetina

P.s. Please note this activity is completely optional. I thought it might be a fun way to help you stay motivated during these last few weeks. ;) Remember how much fun we had with our Flat Stanley project earlier this year?

P.p.s. - The first page is a copy of the letter. The pictures are on the 2nd and 3rd pages - take your pick or create your own Flat Miss Lapetina!

Writing

Opinion Writing-Cats v. Dogs (Part 2)

    • Reason #1 - What is a reason for your opinion?
    • Example #1 - What is an example of your first reason?
    • Reason #2 - What is another reason for your opinion?

    • Opinion Statement - What is your opinion? (Be sure to say it in a slightly different way than the first sentence.)
  2. Upload the completed chart to Seesaw.

Religion

Family Time: Prepare for Sunday’s Mass

  1. Read Sunday’s Gospel together as a family. (You can find all the readings of the day here.) Jesus promises his followers that he will send a helper to be with us - the Holy Spirit.
  2. Discuss these questions with your family:
    1. Can you think of a time when you needed help for something, but you were unwilling to ask for it? Why didn’t you ask for it?
    2. What is easier to do: To “say” you love someone or to “show” your love to someone. In what ways can we show to Jesus and to the world that we actually do love Him?
    3. What are some things that you can ask the Holy Spirit to HELP you do this week as a follower of Jesus Christ?
  3. Check out Heidi Witte’s Children’s Liturgy of the Word YouTube channel.
    1. The May 17th video should be posted on Saturday, but it might be up by Friday.
    2. Mrs. Witte was in the same teaching program as Mrs. Macdonald - she posts these videos weekly with songs, readings, and discussions. (Sometimes she even includes sign language!)
  4. *Bonus (Optional) Activity*: Complete the Word Search for today’s Gospel.

Art

  • Follow this video link and create your own artwork in crayon similar to the one in the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLtvcUEo2UE
