5th Grade Team

Hello and welcome back to school! I hope you had an incredible Summer filled with fun and adventures. My name is Mrs. Schiff and I am delighted to write to you as your child’s Math, Science and Social Studies teacher. We're going to learn, explore, and grow together in our wonderful classroom.

A little about myself: I have been married for 21 years and have lived in Libertyville for 23 years. I have four children: Amanda, who has been married for almost a year now; Olivia, who is a Freshman at Indiana University Kelley School of Business; Ty, who is a Junior at LHS and recently made the Sophomore Basketball team; and Audrina, who is in 4th grade here at SJCS.

Throughout my 12 years at St. Joseph Catholic School, I have been furthering my education. I earned my Education degree from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2019. Last year, I assumed the role of 5th - 8th grade Middle School Resource Teacher and worked with students who hold ISP’s and 504 plans. I am currently working towards earning my Special Education credential as well.

As this new school year starts, I will be working closely with each student to ensure their success. During my time as the 5-8 Resource Teacher, I gained a strong understanding of the Middle School Math, Science, and Social Studies curriculum. I will continue to work closely with these teachers to ensure the 5th graders are prepared for 6th grade.

I am grateful for your trust and support as their teacher, and feel free to contact me with any questions.

Many Blessings!

Also...I have created a new Amazon wish list of items that will help grow our library of knowledge and also improve my new way of teaching math and ensuring that each student continues to grow and learn in many different ways. We will also be learning study skills and I need supplies from my wish list to make this happen as well. Any donation is greatly appreciated. Link is here or under Amazon tab on the side... thank you!

Dearest 5th Grade Parent’s,

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to teach and be a part of your children’s lives this school year. It has been an honor and a joy to share this year in their educational journey.

They are leaving our classroom with so much growth - both inside and out. It has been a pleasure to watch each child bloom this year. We have laughed, shared so many stories, and have learned so many new things. The best part is the special bond we created that only those in this class will ever know.

I do wish that it could last forever; this is the hard part of my job - letting go at the end of the year. I am reluctant as I let them walk out my door, for we have spent many months together learning and growing. Some students I have been with since Pre-School. But as hard as it is to do, it is time for me to let them go.

Please remember this: I care deeply about your children and will always be interested in their destiny. Even though they will not be in my classroom next year, they will always have a special place in my heart. In all honesty, before I became a teacher I thought my heart only had room for my 4 beautiful children. I had no idea I could fit 44 more kids in one heart.

I hope you enjoy your Summer. Spend time with your now 6th grader, and keep up the great work!

Many Blessings & Much Love ,

Tiffany Schiff

Tuesday, May 30, 2023 Homework

Math - Practice Test 1A/2A (Today we worked on our review pages in-class from the text book. Then I passed out their Practice Test to look at and I did offer for them to start in class if they wanted. This gives me a chance to see how they are doing. Since, this chapter was taught pretty choppy because of 4 days of math iReady testing and 2 days of math placement testing, I am allowing them to use vocabulary section notes from textbook on the test on Thursday, as well as asking me any question...as always. They had 6 days of disruption from teaching this chapter and it is not fair to them to not have a refresher of note help if needed.)

Science - None - The weekly D.O.S. (Daily Oral Science) has been passed out and is due by Friday. (We did not have Science today due to the Tuesday Mass schedule)

Social Studies: Packet on President's (H.W. Bush, Clinton and W. Bush)  if not finished in class. The weekly D.O.G. (Daily Oral Geography) was passed out and is due by Friday.  (Today we learned about President H.W. Bush, President Clinton, and President W. Bush. Ask your child to tell you one fact about each President. We also watched short kids videos on each President assigned in Google Classroom. Please feel free to watch them at home as well. They also worked on a States Abbreviations WS in class. Please know that they will all do great on the State Abbreviations test. They will have a word bank to choose from and if they get stuck, they can come to me and I will give them two abbreviations to pick from as an option. I want them to succeed and they have been through the wringer with the amount of tests the past two weeks and in this last week.)

Dissection of the Crayfish was today...woo hoo! This was strictly for fun and was totally optional. We learned so much and I want to thank all the parent's that came in to show their love and support with this Lab. Your help was much needed. Thank you...Mrs. Mattingly, Mrs. Metz, Mr. Hutchinson, Mrs. Graham (Lola's mom), Mrs. O'Koren, Mr. Kennedy, and Nanette Randall (Bobby's grandma that was in town). I also want to send a a special Thank You to Mr. Spude, Carmel catholic High School Science teacher. I saw him yesterday and asked him to come and join us and help facilitate. He was amazing and we love him! I was very excited about these dissection opportunities for the students and they were my gifts to them all. I hope they enjoyed both of them.

Math - None (Today we worked on Lesson 11 which dealt with volume of special shape figures . Formulas for volume can be V= L x W x H or V= B x H. I had the students start their homework in class since it is Friday and I don't want to assign Math homework over the weekend. Really proud of how well they did overall.)

Science - None -  (Today we dissected Crayfish....see top note. So much fun stuff to look at and learn.)

Social Studies: Packet on President's (Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson AND Nixon, Carter, Reagan))  if not finished in class.  (Today we learned about a lot of different President's (names above), but not all of us were able to finish the work. I apologize, but I did have to assign as homework to get these points in gradebook. I also Assigned short kids videos on each President in Google Classroom for them to watch at home or as a family, if you'd like.)
