Peek At Our Week December 3 – December 7, 2018

Religion Objectives:  

Seeds Lesson – We wait for Jesus to come. The children will consider what it means to wait and prepare for a special event. The children will learn the beginning of the Christmas story.  The children will become familiar with Advent and recognize ways they get ready for Christmas in their homes.

Advent – The children will know that Christmas we celebrate the birth of Jesus.  The children will desire to prepare for Jesus’ birthday and think of several kind acts they might perform as a gift for Jesus. 

Literacy Objectives: 

OWL – Unit 3 - Week 2 - What do workers in our community do?   Learn new concept words: bus driver, doctor, job, mail carrier, police officer and teacher.  Learn amazing words: alarm, emergency, firefighter, equipment, report and train. Same and different sounds, letter naming, matching upper and lowercase letters, saying letter sounds, what is my word, segment onsets and rimes, and deleting syllables.  The children will also practice identifying rhyming words from a set of three, identify onsets, join syllables to form words and identify the ending sounds in our classmates’ names.  Focus on our letter of the week Kk and identifying it in our environment. We will also match upper and lowercase letter pairs. 

Math Objectives: 

Name common shapes, name common solid shapes (sphere, rectangular prism, and cube) and demonstrate use of location words. We will create and practice patterns and number identification. 2-D and Christmas shape sorting. Ordinal numbers first through fourth. 

Science Objectives:   

The magic of the season comes to our classroom as the children grow candy canes with “magic” growing candy cane seeds.  What does a garden need to grow?  What do our “magic” candy cane seeds need to grow? 

Social Studies Objectives:   

Scholastic My Big World with Clifford: Gingerbread Time. Social Studies Focus: holiday traditions. Vocabulary theme words: gingerbread, decorate, cookie cutter, rolling pin and oven mitt. Math Focus: recognizing shapes. 

We will discuss responsibilities of our community workers.  We will make a group decision through a vote. 

Afternoon Enrichment: 

Monday: Our Little Knights will travel Italy! We will learn about their traditions and flag. This was rescheduled from last week due to snow day.

Tuesday: IXL Math and apps of choice.

Wednesday: Afternoon Gym with Mrs. Beyer’s class. Number 11 exploration – forming the number correctly, the letters in its name, identifying the number 11 and counting to 11.

Thursday: We begin our exploration of a variety of Gingerbread Boy stories.  We will read about Gingerbread Friends and Gingerbread Baby by author Jan Brett and discuss the similarities/differences with these stories. We will create the characters and sequence out the story for retelling.

Friday:  STEAM challenge – We will create a Christmas tree and ornaments to appeal to our five senses.  Music class with Mr. Showstead.
