April 7 to April 10, 2026 Week at a Glance

Math: Chapter 10 on Multiplying and Dividing Fractions (one lesson per day) 

  • Chapter 10, Lesson 5 - Use models to Multiply Fractions (learning objective: Explore using models to multiply a fraction by a fraction)
  • Chapter 10, Lesson 6 - Multiply Fractions (learning objective: We will multiply fractions WITHOUT using models)
  • Chapter 10, Lesson 7 - Multiply Mixed Numbers (We will be using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem...learning strategies to solve)
  • Chapter 10, Lesson 8 - Multiplication as Scaling (learning objective: Comparing the size of a product to the size of one factor based on the size of the other factor, without performing the indicated multiplication)

Science: Chapter 5 on Water Cycles (one lesson per week) & Climate Change Books

  • We will start reading the book What is Climate Change? and fill out comprehension question packets.
  • Learning objectives of “What is Climate Change?” -
  • Explain various causes of climate change.
  • Identify local and global impacts of climate change 
  • Identify ways climate change impacts people differently according to race, class, nationality, culture, etc.
  • Describe ways that climate change impacts them and their families personally.

Social Studies: The Gold Rush starts…

  • “What was the Gold Rush?” books and packets are being read and used this week.
    • We will read Chapters 1 through 7 this week and answer all questions for these chapters. Specific questions to ask and discuss will be on my nightly Edlio post. 
      • Learning Objective of the Gold Rush:
  • Why and how the Gold Rush began
  • What life was like during the Gold Rush 
  • What lasting effects did the Gold Rush have on California's people and land
  • Students will also take away a better understanding of the Gold Rush's incredible impact on California's history.

Thursday, April 2, 2026 Homework

Math -  None (Today, we completed a 'Check My Progress' worksheet to assess how lessons 1 through 4 have been progressing so far. Please continue practicing multiplication flashcards at home, as we will be doing a lot of multiplication and division in the next few weeks.)
 
Science - None - (Since we are ahead in Science, I took this time to have them explore different topics of Science in BrainPop for fun, not for a grade.)
 
Social Studies - None (Today we continued reading the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World... chapters 6 & 7. Then we completed the questions on these two chapters. We will start discussing their projects on a Wonder in class on Tuesday of next week. We will also have an individual presentation project on a Wonder of their choice. Each person will present a different Wonder. I have a list and instructions for Wonders. These packets will be distributed to each student starting on Tuesday of next week for you all to review. This entire project will be completed and researched at school, according to my rubric, so there's nothing to worry about at home. We will teach students how to use Canva, as it is a new program for some of them, and how to create an interactive online poster board/bulletin board to present to the class. I'm so excited about this unit and the projects coming their way. They will learn a great deal from it.)

Math -  pgs 729 & 730 if not finished in class with extra enrichment worksheet - optional IXL lesson QFQ...look it up by clicking on the search button and typing QFQ and then pick 5th-grade lesson (Today, we worked on multiplying whole numbers and fractions. This came easily to those who know their facts. A little bit more of a struggle for those who do not. Please continue practicing multiplication flashcards at home, as we will be doing a lot of multiplication and division in the next few weeks.)
 
Science - None - (Today, my class had their monthly visit with Ms. Han & Mrs. Walsh. Ms. Bubis's class watched a BrainPop video on Biodiversity...this was not graded.)

Math - Lesson 2 worksheet, if not finished in class (Today, we worked on estimating products of fractions when multiplying. This came easily to those who know their facts. A little bit more of a struggle for those who do not. Please continue practicing multiplication flashcards at home, as we will be doing a lot of multiplication and division in the next few weeks.)
 
Science - None - Schiff only (Today, we read about the different spheres of the Earth. What are the four major spheres of Earth's system?... They are air, water, land, and all living things.  What are the two leading gases in the Earth's atmosphere?...nitrogen and oxygen  What spheres did we read about?...atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, and biosphere. Ms. Bubis's class did this yesterday.)

Welcome back from Spring Break. Hope it was restful for all! It was great seeing the students today!

Math - None (Today, we eased back into Math by doing our weekly 40-minute requirement of iReady math lessons. Please keep practicing multiplication flashcards at home, as we will do a lot of multiplication in the next few weeks.)

Science & Social Studies - None (Today, we continued to watch the Disney movie, National Treasure, which I love so much. It has so many historical mentions throughout the film. You should watch it as a family if you haven't seen it. They have it streaming on Disney+. The second one is great, too, and we might watch it by the end of the school year.)

Math - None (Since we took our Chapter 9 test yesterday and so many students are starting to leave tomorrow for Spring Break, I am not starting Chapter 10 until after the break. Instead, we worked on a lesson on the History of St. Patrick's Day in Math. Please keep practicing multiplication flashcards at home, as we will do a lot of multiplication in the next few weeks.)
 
Science - (We are ahead in Science, so I decided to hand out the Declaration of Independence test to do instead during this class time. They have their book, packet, and a very special study guide I created for the test. This concludes our unit on the Declaration.)
 
Social Studies - None (Today, we started learning about the Trail of Tears. We did a Webquest packet on the Trail of Tears... the students had to visit the website I provided and answer the questions in the packet using the information from that site. It was an interesting read for them all.)

Social Studies: The Declaration of Independence

  • On Monday and Tuesday, we will finish our Declaration of Independence books and comprehension packets. We will read chapters 7 through 11 and answer the accompanying questions.
  • On Thursday and Friday, we will watch the Disney movie National Treasure, which has many points on the Declaration of Independence throughout the movie…it’s one of my favorites

Learning Objectives of the Declaration of Independence:

  1. Analyze the philosophy of government expressed in the Declaration of Independence, with an emphasis on government as a means of securing individual rights 
  2. Analyze the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution and the success of each in implementing the ideals of the Declaration of Independence. 
  3. Evaluate the significant debates that occurred during the development of the Constitution and their ultimate resolutions in such areas as shared power among institutions, divided state-federal power, slavery, the rights of individual states, and the status of American Indian nations under the commerce clause.  
  4. Enumerate the powers of government outlined in the Constitution and the fundamental liberties ensured by the Bill of Rights. 
  5. Describe the basic law-making process and how the Constitution provides numerous opportunities to monitor and influence government. 
  6. Understand the functions and responsibilities of the free press.

Friday, March 13, 2026 Homework

Math - None - I moved the math test from today to next Tuesday. (Today, we worked on two math IXL review lessons: FHD & FAA. Please keep practicing multiplication flashcards at home, as we will do a lot of multiplication in the next few weeks.)
 
Science - None (Today, since we just had our Chapter 4 test yesterday and I didn't want to start a new unit on a Friday, we did double Social Studies today. In Science, we learned about the key players (Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Federalists, Napoleon Bonaparte, etc) of the Louisiana Purchase and answered some questions from the reading we did. Then they did a BrainPOP on Thomas Jefferson, but I did not count this as a grade at this time. It was purely for extra learning, knowledge, and enrichment.)
 
Social Studies - Louisiana Purchase packet, if not finished in class during Science (Today we worked on a packet about the War of 1812. This helped the students earn some national pride for the Americans and learn how we claimed the land now known as the eastern United States. They also learned vocabulary words, like: impressment, nationalism, anthem, and secede.)

~ A friendly reminder: make sure your child is dressed for the weather (boots, COATS, hats…). If the temperature (real feel) is above 20, we go out!

  • Field Trip on April 29th to the Kenosha Public Museum to learn about Native American tribes living in Wisconsin and dissect Owl Pellets. We also have another Field Trip on May 20th to the Civil War Museum in Kenosha. More info on chaperoning by our room parents—field trip forms to go home in April. I am so excited about these enrichment opportunities.

Great job, 5th Graders!

The Stations of the Cross are a way for Christians to remember the last day of Jesus’ life. There are 14 stations, each representing an important moment from Jesus' sentencing to death to His placement in the tomb. When people pray the Stations of the Cross, they move from one station to the next, thinking about what Jesus experienced and how much He loves us.

Along the way, Jesus carries His cross, falls several times, meets His mother Mary, and receives help from Simon of Cyrene. A woman named Veronica kindly wipes His face. Finally, Jesus is nailed to the cross, dies, and His body is placed in a tomb.

Praying the Stations of the Cross helps families remember that Jesus suffered and died because He loves us and wants to save us. It also reminds us to show kindness, courage, and love to others, even when things are difficult.

Thursday, March 12, 2026 Homework

Math - None- I moved the math test from this Friday to next Tuesday - (Today, since we have been working so hard, I allowed them to play iReady Math games. They needed a brain break from all the fraction work. We will resume with more fraction review tomorrow. Please keep practicing multiplication flashcards at home, as we will do a lot of multiplication in the next few weeks.)
 
Science - None (Today, we took our Chapter 4 Test. They were allowed to use their study guides and textbooks during the test.)
 
Social Studies - D.O.G. is due by Friday (Today, we read chapters 5 & 6 in our "What Was the Declaration of Independence" books and comprehension packets. They already love this book and all the information it shares with us.)
