Fundations: (phonics) This week students will focus on spelling words with r-controlled vowels /ar/ and /or/, and /er/, /ir/, and /ur/. Students will practice with gel boards, dry erase boards, magnetic letter boards and writing these words in a sentence: burst, burn, termite, hamster, first and dirty. Trick words: learn, earth, picture
Reading and Writing: (Wit and Wisdom) Students will focus on what life was like for a pioneer. Students will look at visual art and share What do they “ notice” and “wonder” about this painting? We will review what makes a text non-fiction. Grammar this week is focused on proper nouns and capitalization.
Math: We will continue to practice 2 digit addition as we finish up and begin to prepare for the Chapter 4 test. Students will use a variety of ways to clarify the steps to effectively solve these problems. We continue to do sample problems at our whiteboard and “decide” if it is necessary to regroup tens to ones in order to subtract.
Religion: First Reconciliation is fast approaching! We are hoping to take a walking field trip over to church to see where we will make our first reconciliation and talk with Fr. about the steps to make our first confession. We continue to talk about forgiveness and making good choices. We have been learning the process of examining our conscience and practicing the Act of Contrition prayer.
Social Studies: Students continue to learn in the unit on Economics ideas about where goods are from, what natural resources are used in making goods. This week we will learn more about not only how good are made, but how they are delivered to different places for our purchase. Vocabulary words: goods, trade, transportation, consumer, producer, and income will be our focus.
Reminders:
Fundations: (phonics) We will begin Unit 8 this week with “r-controlled” vowels. For example: /ar/ in car and /or/ in horn. Our trick words to practice are: different, world and answer.
Reading and Writing: (Wit and Wisdom) Students will write an informational paragraph on the impact plants or animals have on the Plains Indians. We will continue using our Plains Indians book to use text vocabulary to notice words inside of other words. For example: reserve in reservation. We will continue to work in small reading groups to use our decodable readers from Module 2, focusing on decoding skills when students come across tough/unknown words using context clues and prior knowledge.
Math: We will continue learning strategies to subtract a 1 digit number from a 2 digit number with regrouping. For example: 23-9 (take a group of ten from the tens place and create 13 to subtract 9 from) Then solving 13-9 and dropping the remaining 1 ten from the tens place to equal a difference of 14. Students will use base ten blocks and work mats to clarify concepts with their style of learning. We will emphasize stacking a horizontal subtraction sentence to vertical for visual clarity as well. Example: 23-9=____ to 23
- 9
Religion: We will continue working through our Reconciliation book to prepare for Reconciliation. Our God is a forgiving and all loving God. We will focus this week on Forgiveness. We need to forgive ourselves and others.
Social Studies: We will continue learning How do people use their environment? for food, shelter, and clothing. This ties in nicely with our Wit and Wisdom learning for that cross-curricular learning emphasis. We continue to use flashcards with text vocabulary: such as natural resources, conserve, pollute, and environment.
*No Science units until wrapped up with Social Studies!
